Carol McCoy - May 14, 1939 - Nov. 3, 2008

Carol McCoy, age 69, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Monday, November 3, 2008, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Carol Joann Radke was born in Alta, Iowa, on May 14, 1939, the daughter of Erwin and Alice (Holtz) Radke. She was baptized on June 4, 1939, at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Hanover (rural Alta) and in 1953 affirmed her faith when she was confirmed in the same church.

Carol received her education from kindergarten through fourth grade in the Aurelia, Iowa, school system. She attended grades five through eight at St. John’s School at Hanover. Carol graduated from Alta High School in 1957.

Following graduation, Carol worked as a secretary at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake and then was a secretary at the Alta School District where she met a new teacher and coach named Delbert McCoy. Del and Carol were united in marriage on July 23, 1961, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hanover. The couple was blessed with three children: Valerie, Vanessa and David.

Del and Carol subsequently moved their family to Storm Lake where Del started a new job teaching and coaching at Storm Lake High School. They spent many happy years together raising their family and attending the numerous school events in which their children participated as well as the sports events Del coached. Del passed away June 7, 2008. He and Carol would have been married 47 years last July.

A loving wife, devoted mother and grandmother, Carol led a full and happy life. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake where she was involved in various activities including Altar Guild and Ladies Aid. She was also a member of Buena Vista Regional Hospital Auxiliary. Along with raising her family, Carol worked part time as a secretary at Josten’s, The Women’s Shop, and the Storm Lake Middle School. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and needlework and often made special gifts for her family. In 2005, Carol and Del took great pleasure from a trip they took together to Europe.

Carol’s family was always her priority. She treasured every moment she spent with her children, and in later years, her grandchildren found a special place in her heart. Carol’s gentle and caring presence will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters: Valerie Rosenthal and Vanessa (Jeff) Stewart, both of Alta; son David (Kimberlynn) McCoy of O’Fallon, Missouri; grandchildren: Jacob (Amy) Stewart of Alta; Benjamin Rosenthal and Jackson Rosenthal of Alta; Logan McCoy, Preston McCoy and Maddux McCoy of O’Fallon; brothers: Gordon (Doris) Radke of Warden, Montana, and Robert (Sally) Radke of Boone, Iowa; sister Marilyn (Arlin) Hinkeldey of Cherokee, Iowa; sisters-in-law: Lucille (Frank) Rose of Spencer, Iowa; Colleen (Roger) Olson of Wood Lake, Minnesota; Judith (Andy) Van Dorpe of Fargo, North Dakota; and Dorothy McCoy of Clarkfield, Minnesota; extended family and a host of friends.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Erwin and Alice Radke; her husband, Delbert McCoy; her parents-in-law, Orph and Era McCoy; her brothers-in-law: Kenny McCoy, Dale McCoy, Leland McCoy and Duane McCoy; and her sister-in-law, Marie Cushman.
