Betty J. Petersen - Dec. 3, 1926 - Jan. 27, 2007

Betty Jean Petersen, age 80, of Newell, Iowa, died Saturday, January 27, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Betty Jean Gaes was born December 3, 1926, to Fred and Sylvia (Medlicott) Gaes in Ware, Iowa. She received her education in Rembrandt and Storm Lake, graduating from Storm Lake. On November 7, 1948, in Albert City, Betty was united in marriage to James E. Petersen of Newell. The couple was blessed with two children, Kevin and Kem. Betty and Jim lived in Newell, Iowa, for 58 years. She was a member of Nain Lutheran Church where she loved to help out when her health permitted. Betty loved her family, her garden, spending time at the Okoboji Lakes, fishing, and her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved to read and enjoyed mystery stories. She was a devoted and loving wife, who treasured any time spent with her family.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband Jim; son Kem and wife Barb Petersen of Newell; daughter-in-law Claire (Kevin) Petersen of Newell; four grandchildren, Abby Jones and husband Jeff and son Brody of Cushing, Molly Petersen and son Harrison of West Des Moines, Kodi Petersen of Des Moines, and Travis Petersen of Carroll; sister Mary Lue Rude and husband Dale of Sioux City; brother James Gaes of Storm Lake; sister-in-law Lea Gaes of Storm Lake; brother-in-law William Petersen of Hoffman Estates, Illinois; sister-in-law MaryLinn Petersen of Wahpeton; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and extended family and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her son Kevin, two brothers, Raymond Gaes and Fred Gaes, Jr., a sister Jeanette Gaes and a sister Leone and husband Walter Buchholz, brother-in-law Gerald Petersen, and sisters-in-law Carol Petersen and Shirley Gaes.

Funeral services for Mrs. Petersen will be held on Wednesday, January 31, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell. Burial will be in the Newell Cemetery. The arrangements are under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.

Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to service time.
