Donna Garlock - Dec. 16, 1932 - Feb. 4, 2007
Donna Garlock, age 74, of Storm Lake, formerly of Odebolt and Lake City, Iowa, died Sunday, February 4, 2007, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake following a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
Donna Rae Sporleder was born on December 16, 1932, to Albert and Bessie (Amsden) Sporleder on a farm in Calhoun County, Iowa, near Lake City. Donna attended country school near Varina, Iowa, and then in Auburn, Iowa. She graduated from Auburn High School with the class of 1951.
On May 26, 1957, Donna was united in marriage to Lance Robert Garlock in Lake City. The couple was blessed with three children: Lance, Valerie and Gale. They were married nearly 47 years before Lance died on May 5, 2004.
Lance and Donna owned and operated the Rexall Drug Store from 1966 to 1986 in Odebolt where they were active members of the community. Donna was a former member of the Odebolt-Arthur Booster Club and the Ingleside Club. She also served the Odebolt area as a volunteer EMT. She and Lance then moved to Storm Lake. Donna was a longtime and faithful member of the Presbyterian Church and currently a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. She served her Lord in many capacities including the church offices of Elder and Deacon as well as on Outreach and various other committees. She was a hospice volunteer, member of Beta Sigma Sorority, and president of the Storm Lake TOPS chapter. At the time of her death, Donna was semi-retired and managing the Storm Lake Senior Center. A devoted wife and mother, her treasured family always came first and was near to her heart. Donna loved life, being with her family and many friends, and giving of herself to help others. Her caring and gentle presence will be dearly missed by all those who loved her.
Left to cherish Donna’s memory are her son, Lance G. Garlock of Storm Lake; daughter Valerie (Duane) Kavanaugh of Groton, South Dakota; daughter Gale (Pat) McEvoy of Elgin, Minnesota; her precious grandchildren: Spenser and Mikaela Kavanaugh of Groton, South Dakota, and Reece and Braeden McEvoy of Elgin, Minnesota; sisters-in-law Viola Sporleder of Winona, Minnesota, and Betty Garlock of Fonda, Iowa; cousins Elmer Sporleder, Ann (Sporleder) Jacobs, Dale Sporleder and Duane Sporleder; nieces and nephews; extended family and a host of friends.
Donna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lance R. Garlock; a stillborn infant brother, Dean Sporleder; her sister, Lillian Blair; and her brother, Charles Sporleder.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Garlock will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 7, 2007, at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 6, 2007, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
