Florence B. Edwards - Jan. 4, 1906 - Mar. 17, 2007

Florence Bell Edwards, age 101, died Saturday, March 17, 2007, at M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center in Canandaigua, New York.

Florence was born on January 4, 1906, in Green County, near Paton, Iowa, and was the daughter of Alexander Boyd and Anna Bell (Jester) McFadden. The family moved to Storm Lake in 1919. She graduated from high school there in 1923 and from Buena Vista College cum laude in 1927. She did summer graduate work in library science at the University of Illinois in 1928 and 1929.

Florence was employed as the librarian and registrar at Buena Vista College from 1927 to 1934.

On February 6, 1932, Florence married Paul S. Edwards of Storm Lake. She was bookkeeper for the gas station that Paul operated in Storm Lake until 1951.

She and Paul and their sons moved to Ephrata, Washington, in the Columbia basin in 1951. They owned and operated small grocery stores in central and eastern Washington until 1976 when they returned to Storm Lake and sold antiques.

Starting in 1919, Florence was a very active member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, and then after they moved to Washington, of the Ephrata Presbyterian Church, serving as a church elder and Sunday school teacher. She was also active with Presbyterian Women. In Storm Lake, she was a Buena Vista County Hospital volunteer and member of Ingleside Club, Keystone Reading Club and Storm Lake Questers Prairie Chapter 110.

She moved to Clark Meadows enriched housing in Canandaigua in 2003, then to M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center in 2004.

She is survived by two sons, Samuel (Judith Rickey) Edwards of Farmington, New York, and L. Dean (Carolyn) Edwards of Rochester, New York; one daughter, L. Jane Nichols of Anchorage, Alaska; eight grandchildren: Audra (R.J.) Wynne, Karl, Kristin and Robert Rickey, Michael (Elizabeth Siess) Edwards, Dawn (Michael Hill) Edwards, Christopher (Ellen) Edwards and Kenneth Nichols; eight great grandchildren: Emily, Brian, David, Paul and Joseph Wynne, Anna and Ellen Edwards-Siess and Taylor Nichols; and nine nieces and nephews.

Florence was predeceased by her husband, Paul, in 1983 and two sisters: Lillian Whaley and Ruth Svec.

Florence will be remembered as a beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 20, 2007, at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake.
