Raymond Burgess - Aug. 22, 1920 - Mar. 21, 2007

Raymond “Ray” Burgess, age 86, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 21, 2007, at his home following a lengthy illness.

Raymond Eugene Burgess was born August 22, 1920, in Graham, Missouri, the only child of Earl and Cora (Kent) Burgess. Ray spent most of his life in and around Storm Lake. He started school in a small country school located in Washington Township northwest of Storm Lake. He also attended school in Truesdale, Marathon, Storm Lake and Des Moines.

On April 13, 1940, Ray married Margaret Boots of Nemaha, Iowa, in Glenwood, Iowa. Four children were born to this union: Beverly, Nancy, Derald and Peggy.

During World War II, Ray spent two years in the United States Army serving in the Pacific theatre, mostly in Burma.

Ray worked for Paul Park Construction in Storm Lake for 35 years as an equipment operator and carpenter. After retiring in 1982, Ray enjoyed woodworking in his shop at home as well as traveling and visiting with family and friends. He was the happiest when helping others.

Ray was a member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake for over 50 years, a 30-year member of the Methodist building committee, a life member of V.F.W. Post 6172, and a former Boy Scout leader.

Preceding Ray in death were his parents and infant daughter, Beverly.

Surviving are Margaret, his wife of nearly 67 years; a son, Derald (JoAnn) Burgess of Blair, Nebraska; daughters Nancy (Richard) Mozga and Peggy (Don) Skinner, all of Des Moines, Iowa. Also surviving are eight grandchildren: Scott Mozga of Des Moines; Chris (Fontay) Mozga of San Jacinto, California; Michael Burgess of Omaha, Nebraska; Jill (Tim) Benoit of Des Moines; Troy (Leticia) Skinner of Des Moines; Coquette (Corey) Jensen of Omaha; Trent (April) Skinner and Traci (Adam) Crabb, all of Des Moines; great-grandchildren: Jordon, Anton and Krislyn Mozga; J.J. Dixon; Elizabeth, Brianna, Brenna and Michael Burgess; Zac, Zoey and Zevon Benoit; Maizie and Cora Jensen; Isaiah, Trinity, Quinton and Troy Skinner; and Carson Crabb; sister-in-law Kathleen Karls of Tekamah, Nebraska; a very special friend, Shirley Burmeister of Storm Lake; and many more relatives and friends.

Funeral Services for Mr. Burgess will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by Alta V.F. W. Post 6172. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
