Elda Plog - Sept. 1, 1904 - July 13, 2007

Elda Plog, age 102, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and formerly of the Alta and Hanover areas, died on Friday, July 13, 2007, at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.

Elda Henriette Wilhelmine Bumann was born on September 1, 1904, to Fred and Wilhemine (Oldenburg) Bumann at her parents’ home in northeast Ida County. She was baptized on October 9, 1904, by Pastor H. A. Maas, the Lutheran pastor of Galva.

Elda’s parents and six brothers moved to the Hanover area when she was in her infancy. Elda attended St. John Lutheran School and on the 8th of March 1918, Elda was confirmed in her faith.

Elda assumed house-hold responsibilities, caring for her father and brothers, as her mother became gravely ill. Her mother passed away when Elda was sixteen.

On the 18th day of July 1929, Walter Plog and Elda Bumann were united in marriage. The Lord blessed them with 58 years together.

Walter and Elda ran the Hanover store for 26 years, retiring in the fall of 1963.

In their retirement, Walter and Elda continued to live on the acreage at Hanover. Walter entered Sunset Knoll, and on July 24, 1987, he was called from this life to his heavenly home.

Elda moved to Alta in October 1987 and resided there until June 1991. She entered Methodist Manor (residential side) and later the Health Care wing. She was always very out-going, pleasant to be around and would joke with nurses and staff.

Elda opened her heart and home to her father and he lived with the Plogs until his death. An uncle, Ernest Oldenberg, lived with them during the winter months for many years and helped at the store.

Elda planted a huge garden each year and then canned the bounty she harvested. She was a faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church in Hanover.

Those who cherish her memory include nieces Donna Bumann, Bernice Grau, Donna Jesse, Arlene Ivers, Phyllis Southwick and one nephew, Arlin Bumann.

Elda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter; her six brothers: William, Ernest, Edward, Herman and twins, George and Julius Bumann and their respective spouses. Three Bumann nephews also preceded Elda in death: Orren, Eugene and Donald Bumann.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at the Hanover St. John Lutheran Church in rural Alta, Iowa. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the start of the service on Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to St. John Lutheran Church in Hanover.
