Valborg J. Swenson - Mar. 11, 1914 - July 20, 2007

Valborg “Vallie” Johanna (Haugen) Swenson, 93, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died July 20, 2007, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, IA.

Vallie was born March 11, 1914, in Dunlap, Iowa, to Einar and Annette (Foss) Haugen. Vallie graduated from Dunlap High School in 1933 as valedictorian. Vallie married Swen K. Swenson on July 10, 1943, in Soldier, Iowa. The couple lived in Soldier, Moorhead, Storm Lake and Varina. Vallie continued to live at their acreage in Varina following Swen’s passing in January 2000 until February 2004 when she returned to Storm Lake.

Vallie had been a homemaker and manager of the Alley Galley Café at Ressler Drug in Storm Lake. Following her retirement at Ressler Drug she and Swen began a yard, odd jobs and snow removal business, retiring again in 1993.

Vallie enjoyed playing cards, working outdoors with her rose bushes, watching all sports, participating in sew and do at church, folding bulletins & newsletter at church and being with her family and friends.

Vallie was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, American Legion Auxiliary Unit W. D. Steiner #588 of Varina, and the Peppy Pals and Leisure Ladies Card Clubs of Varina.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Swen; a daughter, Virginia Banks; a granddaughter, Penny Swenson; five brothers, Anton “Tony” Haugen, Jimmy Haugen, Johnny Haugen, Einar Haugen, and Rolland Haugen; and four sisters, Agnes Hicks, Olga Cornelius, Margaret Haugen and Ruth Haugen.

Survivors include two sons, Swen Jr., Urbandale, and Richard and his wife, Lucy, Des Moines; five daughters, Sandy Wagener and her husband Renny, Ankeny; Lenora Libolt and her husband, Bob, Storm Lake; Sallie Leibhart and her husband, Duane, Adel; Ila Chapman and her husband, Richard, York, NE; Connie Demers and her husband, John, Storm Lake and a son-in-law, Vernon Banks, Adel; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild; sisters, Helen Swenson of Harlan, Iowa, and Edna Comfort of Whiting, Iowa; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 25, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake with Pastors Connie Spitzack and Mark Youngquist officiating. Graveside services and burial will be at 3:30 pm following the church service at the Soldier Valley Lutheran Cemetery in Soldier, Iowa.

Visitation will be 5-8:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 24, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present to greet friends. There will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation will continue at the church on Wednesday one hour prior to the service.
