Dorothy J. Hegna - Sept. 22, 1918 - Jan. 5, 2007

Dorothy Jean Hegna, age 88, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Friday, January 5, 2007, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Dorothy Jean Zubradt, was born on September 22, 1918, at Storm Lake, Iowa, to Martin and Lula Fern (Bard) Zubradt. She lived her youth and received her education at Storm Lake, graduating from the Storm Lake High School.

On January 26, 1937, Dorothy was united in marriage to Ernest Hegna at Rembrandt, Iowa, and they were blessed with two children: Joan and William. Following their marriage, Ernest served his country in the United States Navy. Ernest and Dorothy’s married lifetime was spent in several communities within northwest Iowa. Dorothy was a resident of the Hartley community for over 50 years and while residing there she was employed by the Hartley Creamery candling eggs. She became a resident of the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake, Iowa, in December of 2005. Special interest of Dorothy’s included playing cards, cooking, baking, dining out, and gardening. Family held a very special place in Dorothy’s heart and she cherished the times she could spend with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Those who will always cherish her memory include her children: Joan Boetel of Storm Lake, Iowa, and William Hegna, and his wife, Sandra, of Madrid, Iowa; her grandchildren: Kris Boetel of Mesa, Arizona, Nancy Elder of DeSoto, Iowa, Tammy Carlson of Evans, Colorado, Shelley Whitead of Sioux City, Iowa, Willie Hegna of Madrid, Iowa; four great grandsons; two great granddaughters; six great great grandsons; one great great granddaughter; other relatives and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son-in-law, Gary Boetel; one grandson; two great grandsons; grandson-in-law, Merritte Whitead; one brother and one sister.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 12, 2007, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake, Iowa. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements. Burial will be at a later date in Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley, Iowa.
