Darlene E. Hartje - Sept. 21, 1934 - June 17, 2007

Darlene E. Hartje, age 72, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, June 17, 2007, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake following a 14-year struggle with cancer.

Darlene Elizabeth Beckman was born September 21, 1934, to Walter and Sylvia (Schroeder) Beckman in Sheridan Township, Carroll County, Iowa. She was baptized as an infant on October 14, 1934, at the Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Lake City, Iowa, and later confirmed on March 21, 1948, in the same church. Darlene attended and graduated from Lake City High School in 1952. She would further her education in the field of Cosmetology, graduating from Iowa School of Beauty Culture in 1953.

On February 14, 1954, Darlene married Arnold Hartje at the Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Lake City, Iowa. The couple was blessed with two children, Norma and Dwight.

Darlene was an active member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Newell where she held various offices of the Ladies Aid, Cradle Roll Director, Sunday School teacher and Vacation Bible School teacher. She enjoyed homemaking, baking, sewing and gardening, especially tending to her flowers. For most of her life, Darlene kept a daily journal. She found great joy in going to dances with Arnold and was a sincere friend to many people. She delighted in keeping a warm and comfortable home for her family and enjoyed entertaining friends and family alike. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s activities. Darlene’s kind and caring presence will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Norma Breimeier and her husband Bill of New Salem, North Dakota; her son, Dwight Hartje and his wife Karen of Storm Lake; grandchildren: Sandy Wolf and her husband Travis of Mandan, North Dakota; Rachel Breimeier of St. Paul, Minnesota; David, Sarah and Jonathan Hartje of Storm Lake; one brother, Don Beckman and his wife Marlene of Stockton, California; three sisters: Delores Bonney of Denver, Colorado; Diane Nieland and her husband Al of Carroll, Iowa; and Dorothy Frank and her husband Arland of Wall Lake, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Sylvia Beckman; her husband, Arnold; an infant sister; parents-in-law, Herman and Elsie Hartje; brothers-in-law: Merlin Venteicher, Richard Bonney and Russell Biggins; and two nephews, Joseph and Michael Venteicher.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2007, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa, with Pastor Mark Harman officiating. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
