Zella Pike - Nov. 10, 1906 - June 22, 2007

Zella Roose Pike, age 100, of Storm Lake, Iowa, passed away on Friday, June 22, 2007, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Zella Roose was born November 10, 1906, in Kalida, Ohio, to John and Catherine Roose where she was baptized in the Methodist Church. She was confirmed in the Methodist Church in Ottawa and continued her life-long membership in Elmhurst and Storm Lake.

Following graduation from high school in 1924 from Ottawa, Ohio, Zella Roose taught in a one room school house near Continental, Ohio. The following year, she entered Bowling Green College and received her teaching degree in 1928. She continued her teaching career in the Bath and Akron Schools until 1939.

On April 18, 1937, Zella married Kenneth Whitacre Pike. To this union, two daughters were born: Jacqueline Pike Custard and Marcia Pike Schaller. In 1942, Zella and her husband, Kenneth moved to Elmhurst, Illinois, where she was an active member of the Methodist Church and Circle, Chapter JU, PEO, Garden Club and The Federated Women’s Club, serving as President of each organization. At the same time, Kenneth Pike was employed as Director of Engineering for the Quaker Oats Company.

In 1982, Zella Pike moved to Storm Lake, Iowa, where she continued her interest in PEO as a member of Chapter JD, participated in 37 Club, as well as gardening and volunteering at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Gift Shop.

Zella’s greatest love was for her husband, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, friends and devoted caregivers. She was cherished deeply by those who touched her life, and she will be missed by all.

Zella Roose Pike was preceded in death by her parents, John and Catherine Roose; her husband, Kenneth Pike; brothers: Fred Roose, Russell Roose, Ralph Roose and Elbert Roose; sisters: Grace Wertenberger and Lucile Fein; and granddaughter, Corey Sue Schaller.

She is survived by her two daughters: Jackie (Lowell) Custard of Montgomery, Alabama, and Marcia (George) Schaller of Storm Lake, Iowa; grandchildren: Lea Rae (Kerry) Gaines of Madison, Alabama; Jay Tate (Jolene) Custard, and Sean (Catherine) of Montgomery, Alabama; Jodie Custard of Eclectic, Alabama; Harry (Lynn) Schaller of Storm Lake, Iowa; Mark (Vicky) Schaller of Greensboro, North Carolina; and 14 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Sunday, June 24, 2007, from 2:00 pm until service time in the Lakeside Presbyterian Church narthex followed by a 2:30 pm service in the sanctuary. The Sliefert Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements

Interment will be Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at 10:00 am in the Harmon Cemetery, Ottawa, Ohio, with graveside services officiated by Reverend Dan Huther of the United Methodist Church.
