Bettie Ballou - Dec. 10, 1914 - Feb. 5, 2005

Bettie Ballou, age 90, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, February 5, 2005, at Naples County Hospital in Naples, Florida.

Bettie Hazel Skewis was born December 10, 1914, to Elmer A. Skewis and Maude (Seymour) Skewis in Minneapolis, Minnesota. At age 11, she and her family moved to Kimbray, Minnesota, and then to Storm Lake in 1929. She graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1932 and became a teacher at Greenville, Iowa, for several years before she and Leland Ballou were married on May 15, 1939. After their marriage, Bettie and Leland established their home in Storm Lake. They were blessed with two daughters, Cynthia and Barbara.

Bettie was a woman of integrity with a strong sense of responsibility to her family, her church and her community. She was a talented homemaker and a wonderful cook. She dearly loved her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren were a source of great joy to her. Bettie was very interested in art and was instrumental in the formation of the Witter Art Gallery, serving as the first president of the Witter Gallery Board. She was an excellent piano player and played for many organizations, including the Presbyterian Church and the Methodist Church at an early age. She was a member of Chapter EP PEO for over 60 years, a member of Buena Vista #753 of Questers, a member of the Buena Vista Hospital art committee for over thirty years, a Sunday School teacher at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, a charter member of the Storm Lake Fine Arts Club, a member of several bridge groups, and a vice president of the Storm Lake Security Bankcorporation. A very memorable period of time for Bettie was the year that she served as First Lady of the Iowa Bankers Association while Leland was serving as president in 1965. She enjoyed a long association with Buena Vista University, especially her thirty years as a trustee’s wife.

Bettie was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Robert M. Skewis, and her daughter, Cynthia Ballou Brown. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Edgar Leland Ballou; her sister, Anita (Billie) Rosendahl; her daughter, Barbara and her husband David Dvergsten; her grandchildren, Elizabeth Lee Koster and her husband Wayne, Christian David Dvergsten and his wife Jessica, Benjamin Ballou Dvergsten and his wife Sarah, and Margaret Elizabeth Dvergsten. Her great-grandchildren are: Jeffery Ray McWithey, Blaize Robert Koster, Tyler Ballou Dvergsten and Samuel Henry Dvergsten.

Memorial Services will be held Saturday Feb. 12, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake with Reverend Duane Queen officiating. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
