Iona Sievers - 27, 1915 - Mar. 11, 2005

Iona Sievers passed away on Friday, March 11, 2005, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa, at the age of 89 years, 7 months and 15 days.

Iona Dorothea Emma Sievers, daughter of Henry and Emma (Otteman) Sievers, was born July 27, 1915, at home in Coon Township, Buena Vista County, Iowa. She was baptized on August 15, 1915, at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Storm Lake, Iowa, and confirmed that baptism on March 29, 1929, at Zion Lutheran Church. Iona received her education at a one room school house in Coon Township.

On December 29, 1934, she married Herbert Sievers at the Zion Lutheran Church parsonage. To this union three sons, Maynard, Elwin, and Randy were born.

Iona and Herbert farmed until 1965 when they moved to Storm Lake. During her lifetime, she was active in politics, serving as vice chairman of the county Republican central committee. Iona also served as chairman of the Buena Vista County Farm Bureau Women. She was involved in her church, serving as president of the Ladies Aid at Zion and also at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. She was LWML Zone President for four years.

After Herb’s retirement, they spent fifteen winters in Texas, enjoying the warm weather and making new friends. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing dominoes, bridge and other card games. She also enjoyed attending the grandchildren’s school events.

Iona was preceded in death by her parents, husband Herb, sons: Maynard and Elwin, granddaughter Beth Sievers and one brother.

She is survived by a son Randy and his wife Jan of Storm Lake; a daughter-in-law Joyce Sievers of Smithville, Tennessee; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and numerous friends and relatives.

Funeral Services will be Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake with Reverend Steve Schulz officiating. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Monday, March 14, 2005, from 4-8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where family will be present from 6-8:00 p.m.
