John Patterson - Dec. 11, 1970 - Nov. 6, 2004

John Patterson, age 33, of Lake View, Iowa, died Saturday, November 6, 2004, in a car accident.

John Alexander Patterson was born December 11, 1970, to Lucinda (Garlock) Joens and Donald Dennis Patterson at Fonda, Iowa. He was baptized at the United Church of Christ in Fonda in April, 1970, and confirmed in the Schaller Presbyterian Church in 1984. He attended elementary school at Fonda in kindergarten and first grade, then moved with his family to Odebolt where he attended grades 2 and 3. His family moved to Schaller where John completed his primary education, graduating from Schaller High School with the Class of 1989. He later attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake.

John served in the United States Army National Guard from 1988 to 1990 and then enlisted in the United States Navy in December 1990. He served his country in the Desert Storm War aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Valley Forge, earning many commendations—Battle “E” Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with Bronze Star, Southwest Asia Medal with Three Bronze Stars, Navy Unit Commendation, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal—before receiving his discharge in November, 1994. John was awarded the Honor Gauntlet at the US Army Guard graduation ceremonies at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, in 1988 and also earned the marksmanship ranking of Hawkeye Expert during his service to his country.

John was employed as a commercial electrician. He enjoyed fishing, biking, weight lifting and camping. He had great memories of the special times he’d spent fishing with his brother and uncle, his experience at the Boundary Waters, the Naval Dependents Cruise with his grandma, his Desert Storm Homecoming, and the 1:10 Bible Study with his Summit Evangelical Church friends.

Survivors include his mother, Lucinda (Garlock) and husband Rollin Joens of Alta, Iowa; father, Donald Dennis and wife Sis Patterson of Jolley, Iowa; brother Mike and wife Stephanie Patterson of Auburn, Iowa; paternal grandmother Gladys Patterson of Pomeroy, Iowa; uncle Bill Garlock of Lehigh, Iowa; and many extended family members and a host of friends.

John was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather Donald Patterson and his maternal grandparents Bill and Janet Garlock.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 13, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at Summit Evangelical Free Church in Alta with Pastor Doug Corlew officiating. Inurnment will be in the Cedar Cemetery in Fonda. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 10, 2004, from 4—8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6—8:00 p.m. at Summit Evangelical Free Church in Alta.
