Raymond “Shorty” Hansen - Apr. 4, 1922 - Nov. 6, 2004

Raymond “Shorty” Hansen, age 82, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, November 6, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Raymond was born April 4, 1922, at Blair, Nebraska, to Chris and Maren (Nielsen) Hansen. He spent his early childhood on his parents’ farm at Blair before moving with them to Storm Lake. He graduated from Storm Lake High School with the Class of 1940.

Shorty was a veteran of World War II and the Battle of the Bulge, having enlisted on March 18, 1943. He served his country with honor until his discharge on November 9, 1945, remaining a patriot his entire life.

On January 19, 1949, Shorty was united in marriage to Mary Anderson at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. Their union was blessed with a son, Greg, and a daughter, Monie. Shorty operated a shoe repair service in Storm Lake until his retirement in 1985.

Shorty was a faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. He served his community as a member of the Storm Lake Volunteer Fire Department for 13 years. He was an avid fisherman. He enjoyed going to his grandchildren’s activities, especially baseball games. Shorty will be remembered as a loving husband and a devoted father and grandfather who treasured the time he spent with his family.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary, of Storm Lake; son Dr. Greg Hansen of Storm Lake; daughter Monie and husband Ron Person of Portland, Oregon; grandchildren: Jeremy and wife Lana Person of Portland, Oregon, Jennifer and husband Michael Powell of Portland, Oregon, Chris Hansen, Beth Hansen and Colleen Hansen of Storm Lake; and other extended family members and a host of friends.

Shorty was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers Tony and George.

Funeral Services will be Wednesday, November 10, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake with Reverend Douglas Haynes officiating. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Tuesday, November 9, 2004, from 4—8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where family will be present from 6—8:00 p.m.
