Howard Grundman - Nov. 15, 1921 - Nov. 8, 2004

Howard Grundman, age 82, of Storm Lake, formerly from Albuqueque, New Mexico, died Monday, November 8, 2004, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Howard was born November 15, 1921, at Pella, Iowa, to Ralph S. and Katherine Elvira (Burtness) Grundman. He spent his early childhood in Pella where he attended school and graduated from Pella High School. Following graduation, he attended Iowa State University for a short time, secondary to his enlistment in the service.

On September 29, 1942, Howard entered the U.S. Army Airforce. He would go on to serve in WWII and in India- Burma and Northern Burma. During his service time, Howard attained the rank of First Lieutenant, Flight Instructor, and 1st Pilot M.A.T. in Burma/China. He was honorably discharged on May 25, 1955.

Howard was united in marriage to Elizabeth Jane West in Albuqueque where they lived and raised their family. Their union was blessed with four children: Katherine, Tom, Elizabeth, and John. Howard worked at the West Funiture Store prior to his career with Equitable and Prudential Insurances, retiring in 1984. “Axle” continued to work, with his last employment being at Arnold Motor Supply in Storm Lake.

As a child, Howard was baptized December 25, 1922, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sioux City. He was a member of the Second Reformed Church in Pella, Iowa. Howard enjoyed gambling, fishing, golfing and all sports. Howard lived in Albuqueque, New Mexico, for fifty years and the last 2 1/2 years in Storm Lake.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marge, of Cloves, New Mexico; sons: Tom Grundman of Hawthorne, California, and John Grundman of Storm Lake; daughters: Katherine Keywood of AbuDhabi, U.A.E., and Elizabeth Mahon of Arlington, Texas; grandchildren: Jimmy, Daniel and Kevin Mahon, Jake and Kate Grundman, and Jennifer Olsen; brother Tom Grundman of Cherokee; sister Susan Kramer of Park Forest, Illinois; and other extended family members and a host of friends.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents; and first wife Jane W. Grundman.

Memorial Services will be Saturday, November 13, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake with Reverend Jamie Cutler officiating. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
