George Harry Ernst - Feb. 26, 1927 - Nov. 10, 2004

George Harry Ernst, age 77, of Newell, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, November 10, 2004, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

George was born on February 26, 1927, at White River, South Dakota, the son of Christopher Alfred and Elizabeth (Mauch) Ernst. He grew up in White River where he attended school.

In 1952, George joined the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of Private 1st Class, serving during the Korean Conflict.

On April 20, 1960, he was united in marriage to Beverly Blaskowski in Fargo, North Dakota. Their union was blessed with seven children: Karen, Bonnie, Joey, Tammy, Daniel, Christopher, and Amy. The couple moved to Iowa in 1970 from Minnesota. He worked for Lange Dairy until they closed and in 1973 began working for Nobles till they closed in 1984. He retired in 1999 from grounds keeper at Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake.

His interests included woodworking, fishing, doing puzzles, playing cards, collecting eagles, belt buckles, and hats, and playing softball in his younger years. The family has many special memories of fishing trips to Minnesota.

George was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, who enjoyed spending lots of time with his grandchildren and attending family reunions.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Beverly; children: Karen (Tom) Christensen of Cherokee, Bonnie (Steve) Hopper of Newell, Joey (Ginny) Ernst of Newell, Tammy (Larry) Laird of Pocahontas, Daniel Ernst of Newell, Christopher (Jessica) Ernst of Early, and Amy (Ray) Koster of Menlo, IA; 16 grandchildren; brother Jake (Pat) Ernst of Grantsburg, WS; sisters: Kathreen Walters of Greeley, CO, Marge Ziebell of Pierre, SD, Mary (Art) Bromwich of Cambridge, MN, and Elsie (Don) Mack of Grantsburg, WI; many extended family members, and friends.

George was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Rueban, Lee, Wes, and Ben; and sister Carolyn Nieman.

Funeral services for George will be held Saturday, November 13th, 2:00 p.m., at the First Congregational Church in Newell, Iowa, with Reverend Greg Baskerville officiating. Burial will be at the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home.

Visitation for friends and family will be held Friday, November 12th, 5:00-8:00 pm at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.
