Billy Lee Dettmann - Nov. 27, 1931 - Nov. 9, 2004
Billy Lee Dettmann, age 72, of Newell, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, November 9, 2004, at the University Hospital in Iowa City.
Billy was born on November 27, 1931, in Yetter, Iowa, the son of Wilbert C. and Edna (Ringgenberg) Dettmann. He attended country school and graduated from Lake City High School in 1950.
On May 11, 1951, Billy and Maxine Lorraine Kent were united in marriage at Auburn, Iowa. They were blessed with two sons: Kevin and Collin.
He worked for a farmer for a while before moving to Lytton in 1954. He worked as a milk route salesman for the Lytton Maid Creamery and tank wagon delivery for Standard Oil. Billy was a volunteer in the Lytton Fire Department and a member of the Lytton Presbyterian Church. In 1965, they moved to Newell where he continued the tank wagon delivery and opened his own Standard Oil Agency and then worked as a jobber retiring in April of 1990. He continued being active in the Newell community as a volunteer fireman, served on the school board, school bus driver, and transferred his church membership to the United Methodist Church in Newell.
Bill cherished the time spent with his family. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He had special memories of driving stock cars and flying in his younger years. He enjoyed bird watching, gardening, fishing, woodworking, and decorating his yard for the holidays.
Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Maxine; sons: Kevin Dettmann and wife Mary of Eau Claire, WI, and Collin Dettmann of Ames, IA; grandson Nolan Dettmann; sister Dee Ahern of Stuart, FL; sister-in-law, Esther Dettmann of Sac City; brother-in-law, Duane Kent and his wife Lucille of Aurelia; extended family members and many friends.
Billy was preceded in death by his parents, and brother Daryl Dettmann.
Memorial services for Billy will be held Sunday, November 14th, 1:30 p.m., at the United Methodist Church in Newell with Reverend David Schumann officiating. Dennis Hinrichs will sing and Cheryl Baughman will accompany him. Honorary casketbearers will include: Dick Larsen, George Brighton, Donald Olsen, Mac Fagan, Gerald Kreft, Ronald Dettmann, and Otis Schultz (1927-2000). Final resting place is Oaklawn Cemetery in Auburn.
Visitation will be Saturday, November 13th, 6:00-8:00 pm, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell.
