Ross E. Hartman - Feb. 25, 1924 - Dec. 25, 2004

Ross E. Hartman, age 80, of Storm Lake died on December 25, 2004, in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Ross Eugene Hartman was born February 25, 1924, in Schaller, Iowa, to Myron Phillip and Emma Jane (Bennett) Hartman. He lived with his family in Schaller until he was four years old when the family moved to Sterling, Oklahoma. Ross attended school in Sterling, Oklahoma, until he enlisted in the Army on May 24, 1944.

On June 25, 1945, Ross was united in marriage to Robbie Frances in Chickasha, Oklahoma.

He was a member of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. As a child, Ross was baptized in Schaller and later confirmed in Sterling, Oklahoma.

During his enlistment in the Army, Ross served in WWII with the Company L 22nd Infantry. He attained the rank of Private First Class and was designated as acting squad leader soon after he came to his unit. The special honors he received prior to his honorable discharge on May 17, 1946, are as follows: WWII Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon, three Bronze Service Stars, the Bronze Star Medal, and the GO 6 Hq 4th Infantry Division 46 Army of Occupation Ribbon (Germany).

Following his discharge from the Army, Ross started work as a mechanic, then farmed, and later worked for Wunder Tire Shop. He retired from Wilson Foods in 1985. During his years, Ross was active in the church and the Buena Vista County Historical Society.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Robbie of Storm Lake; son, Charles Hartman of Iowa City; sister-in-law, Dema Leu of Duncan, Oklahoma; brothers-in-law: Ernest Kitsmiller of Moorehead, Minnesota, and Don Kitsmiller of Correctionville; as well as other extended family members and friends.

Preceding Ross in death are his parents, infant sons: Jerry Ray and Dean Ross; and his siblings: Floyd, Ralph, Ethel Bruggeman, Archie, Cashie, Cora Rogers, Ben, Roy, Vera Hutton, George and Lewis.

Funeral Services will be Wednesday, December 29, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Schaller Cemetery. Full Military Rites will be performed by the Alta VFW. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the services.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 7:00- 9:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.
