Philip G. Jarnagin - May 3, 1904 - April 3, 2003

Philip G. Jarnagin, age 98, long-time Storm Lake newspaper publisher and civic leader died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Philip Gilchrist Jarnagin was born May 3, 1904, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the son of William C. and Jean (Gilchrist) Jarnagin. William Jarnagin served Des Moines daily newspapers before moving his family to Storm Lake in 1921. Phil graduated from West Des Moines high school in 1921. He attended Buena Vista College for one semester in 1924 and graduated from Drake University in 1926.

He married Jennette M. Olsen, the daughter of A.P. and Anna Olsen of Storm Lake, at Lakeside Presbyterian Church on September 6, 1927. Their only child Jean Anne Seagren died on February 15, 1982.

Phil’s journalistic career began with the Drake Delphic and the Des Moines Register sports desk. He worked for the Fairall Advertising Agency in Des Moines before joining his father at the Storm Lake Pilot-Tribune in 1930. He served the Spencer News-Herald in 1931 and became co-publisher of the Sheldon Sun in 1931 and sold it in 1943 to rejoin his father at the Storm Lake Register and the Pilot-Tribune. He was named Iowa Master Editor-Publisher in 1965. He retired in 1970.

He was a member of the board of directors of Methodist Manor for 16 years and was chairman for five years until 1979. Following his wife’s illness and death, he moved to Methodist Manor in August 1997.

Phil was a past president of the Sheldon and Storm Lake Kiwanis clubs with over 56 years of perfect attendance. He was tournament champion at the Sheldon Golf Club in 1937.

Phil was always involved in community activities. He was past secretary of the Buena Vista University Board of Trustees and held memberships in the Chamber of Commerce, Izaak Walton League, Elks Lodge, Lake Creek Country Club, the Storm Lake United Methodist Church, the Lake Preservation Association and the Republican Party.

Survivors include his grandchildren and great grandchildren: Carol Seagren Hanthorne and her husband, James, Spencer, Iowa; Reverend Kirk Seagren and his wife, Reverend Lilian Seagren and their daughter, Jane Anne, Guthrie Center, Iowa; and Reverend William K. Seagren and his wife, Jenny and their children, Hannah, Nate and Rachel, Philomath, Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jennette on September 16, 1996, by his daughter, Jean Anne and by his son-in-law, Bernard Seagren and by his sister, Jane Reid.

Funeral services will be Monday, April 7th, at 10:30 a.m. at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jamie Cutler officiating. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Friends may call at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home on Sunday after 12 noon where the family will be present from 4 to 6 p.m.
