Raymond E. "Ray" Tongate - June 4, 1914 - Apr. 18, 2003

Raymond E. "Ray" Tongate, age 88 of Storm Lake died Friday, April 18, 2003, at the Methodist Manor Care Center in Storm Lake after a brief illness.

Raymond Earl Tongate was born June 4, 1914, in Hastings, Nebraska, the son of Earl A. and Agnes Mae (Abbot) Tongate. He attended schools in Sioux Falls and Valley Springs, South Dakota, and then graduated from Rembrandt, Iowa, High School in 1932. He attended Buena Vista College and the American Aviation Tech School in Des Moines.

On August 1, 1938, Ray was united in marriage to Elizabeth L. "Betty" Meier in Storm Lake. Betty died on October 24, 2002.

Ray served in the United States Navy as an aviation machinist's mate second class during World War II. He spent his working career in sales, manufacturing and marketing aircraft and had worked for the Carey Salt Company, Thorpe Well Company and Simonsen Manufacturing Company. Ray took great pride in the fact that he had had an opportunity to share his business experience with two young men, helping them to establish their own businesses.

He was an active member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church where he was a deacon. He was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club, Rotary International and the American Legion.

Ray is survived by a son Don Tongate and his wife, Linda, Nashua, New Hampshire; a daughter Jane Wells and her husband, Dan, Vienna, Virginia; a grandson Christopher Tongate and his wife, Michelle, and their children, Tyler and Alivia, Peoria, Arizona; and other extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Betty and by a sister Treza Mae.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake with Reverend Marvin Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present to greet friends.
