Michael B. Johnson - June 14, 1946 - Aug. 27, 2003

Michael B. Johnson, age 57, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, a native of Storm Lake, died August 27, 2003, at his Tuscaloosa home.

Michael Brian Johnson was born June 14, 1946, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the son of Carol Kenneth Johnson and Virginia (Berg) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. He attended Storm Lake Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1964.

As a fifth grader, Michael chose the trumpet to play in the 5th Grade Band and that proved to be the beginning of long and successful music career. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from Morningside College in Sioux City and then continued his education at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, where he earned his Masters Degree in Music.

At the time of his death, Michael was on the faculty at the University of Alabama School of Music in Tuscaloosa where he had served as instructor of trumpet since 1971. He performed professionally with a wide variety of ensembles throughout his distinguished career including the Karl King Band, the orchestras of Sioux City, Sioux Falls, Lincoln, Omaha, Tuscaloosa and the Alabama Symphony.

Michael leaves a legacy of many former students who are now employed as teachers and performers throughout the country. He will be sorely missed by his many friends and colleagues and remembered for his zest for life, for his enormous heart and his independent spirit.

He was a talented gourmet cook and enjoyed collecting classic cars and loved scouring the countryside for antique furniture. Michael also had an extensive collection of antique trumpets and firearms.

He is survived by several aunts and cousins including: Kenneth & Betty Armstrong, Storm Lake, Billie and Charlotte Meyer, Ruthven, Marlyss and Bill Bryant, Larrabee, Nila Miller, Aurelia, Nola and Glen Carlson, Storm Lake, Laura and Marlin Weier, Linn Grove, Darold and Karen Berg, Boone, Ron and Grace Berg, Sartell, Minnesota, Merridee Matson, Carrollton, Texas, and Karen Berg, Aurora, Colorado,

He was preceded in death by his father on October 30, 2000, and by his mother on May 1, 2001.

A memorial fund in Michael’s name has been established, with the proceeds to go to the Storm Lake High School Band Department.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, September 13, at 11:00 a.m., at the Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Reverend Duane Queen will officiate. There will be no visitation prior to the memorial service, burial will be in the Fairfield Township Cemetery rural Albert City.
