Robert C. “Bob” Ohlund - Dec. 22, 1928 - Sept. 7, 2003

Robert C. “Bob” Ohlund, age 74, of Storm Lake died September 7, 2003, in the Nebraska Veterans Home in Norfolk, NE.

Bob was born in Stanton, Nebraska on December 22, 1928, to Gustaf and Ida (Norling) Ohlund. He attended grade school and high school in Stanton, then graduated from Scottsbluff Junior College in 1949. He served his country for four years in the military as a torpedo man’s mate second class in the Navy on the USS Bashaw during the Korean Conflict. During this service he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal.

After his discharge from the Navy, Bob attended Wayne State Teacher’s College on the G.I. Bill and graduated with a B.A. in Education in 1956. While at Wayne State, he met Betty Bunger and they were married in Wayne on May 27, 1956. To this union, three children were born: Tamara, Gregory and Barbara.

Bob taught a variety of subjects at the high school and junior high levels and also coached football, basketball and track at Bloomfield and Tekamah, Nebraska. While teaching at Tekamah, he attended evening classes at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, graduating in 1971 with a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration. During summers, Bob worked for Farmers Mutual Insurance Company as a crop adjuster and joined Farmers Mutual full time in 1973 as a Northwest Iowa Territorial Supervisor.

After retirement, Bob pursued his avid interest in golf, fishing, playing (and sometimes cheating at) cards, and spending time with his family and friends. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels, as well as at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center coffee shop. Bob loved “spoofin” his grandkids, cooking up practical jokes for his friends, nick and dime betting on cribbage, watching his grandchildren play sports, eating good food, and laughing at himself—and letting his golf buddies know he was a Swede and proud of it. He is loved and he will be missed.

Bob is survived by his wife, Betty of Storm Lake; his children: Tamara S. Schwartz and husband Dave of Harlan, Iowa, Gregory G. Ohlund and wife Lori of Denison, Iowa, and Barbara Ohlund and husband Joe Monahan of Lincoln, Nebraska; his grandchildren: Bryan, Todd, Derek and Taylor Schwartz, Grant Ohlund, and Dominic Monahan; his siblings Stan Ohlund of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Alex Ohlund of Torrance, California and Blanche Sutherland of Stanton, Nebraska; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mr. Ohlund was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Norman, Clifford and Dr. Arley Ohlund, and his sisters Betty Dobb, Joy Ohlund and Norleen Ohlund.

Funeral Services will be Wednesday, September 10, 2003, at 10:30 at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church, with Reverend Dr. Beverlee Bell officiating. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Amvets Post #66 will conduct full military rites.
