Delmar McGowan - June 7, 1929 - Sept. 11, 2003
Delmar McGowan, age 74, of Storm Lake died September 11, 2003, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Sioux City.
Delmar McGowan was born on June 7, 1929, to Urany and Elizabeth (Gerjets) McGowan at Alta, Iowa. He lived his childhood years on the farm northwest of Alta with his parents and family. He attended country school through grade school and graduated from Alta High School in 1946.
On October 13, 1949, Delmar married Betty Steward in Minnesota. Their marriage was blessed with five children.
Delmar worked at Hy-Grade in Storm Lake for a number of years and was a federal meat inspector at IBP for a time and then was superintendent of the Storm Lake Municipal Golf Course.
In his spare time, Delmar liked to play golf and cards, and enjoyed traveling and hunting, especially hunting for pheasants. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the New York Yankees.
Delmar was a loving husband, father and grandfather who cherished his family above all earthly interests. He will be forever missed.
Delmar McGowan is survived by his wife, Betty of Storm Lake, his son Terry and wife Ann McGowan of Urbandale, daughters Patricia and husband Dean Batt of Stamford, Nebraska, and Peggy and husband Mark Pottorff of Sergeant Bluff; grandchildren Loretta Batt of Huxley, Philip Batt of Orleans, Nebraska, DeAnna Ruskamp and husband Matt of Lincoln, Nebraska, Ashley Batt of Stamford, Nebraska and Justin, Michelle and Scott Pottorff of Sergeant Bluff; brothers Merlin and wife Delores McGowan, Donald McGowan and Garlan and wife Helen McGowan, all of Alta; sister Karen and husband Russ Gaskill of Alta; and many other relatives and friends.
Mr. McGowan was preceded in death by his parents, sons Gary Allen and Delmar Lee, Jr., his sister Deloris, and brothers Robert and Dennis.
