Emmett Wade Smith - Jan. 5, 1915 - May 17, 2005

Emmett Wade Smith, age 90, of Marshalltown, Iowa and formerly of Sioux Rapids, Albert City and Pocahontas, Iowa, died Tuesday, May 17, 2005 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

Wade was born on January 5, 1915 to Aubrey and Sadie Belle (Campbell) Smith in Monroe City, Indiana. He attended grade school in Royal, Iowa before graduating as Salutatorian of the Class of 1934 from Sioux Rapids High School.
Wade served his country during World War II as a member of the United States Navy. He was a lifelong patriot; he was a member of the Sioux Rapids American Legion and served as Commander of that group for a number of years.

On November 30, 1963, Wade was united in marriage to Ruth Taylor at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Wade and Ruth were successful farmers in the Sioux Rapids and Pocahontas, Iowa, areas and named Farmer of the Year by a Storm Lake newspaper. Wade was very involved in his community. He was a 50-year-member of the Shrine and a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge. Wade enjoyed singing with area Barber Shop singers for many years.

Left to cherish Wade’s memory are his wife, Ruth, of Marshalltown; brothers: Kenny Smith of Greensburgh, Indiana; Joy Smith of Webb, Iowa, and Omar and wife Dorothy Smith of Bancroft, Iowa; sisters: Gladys Miller of Tucson, Arizona, Margaret and husband Lee Messenger of Windsor Heights, Iowa, and Glenna and husband Francis Miller of Rockford, Illinois; sister-in-law Doris Smith of St. Peters, Missouri; many nieces, nephews and other relatives, as well as a host of friends.

Wade was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Clifton Smith.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 23, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. at the First United Church in Sioux Rapids, with Pastor Emily Allen officiating. Pastor Charles Fry of Marshalltown will also officiate at the services. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the funeral service.
