He began his education at Afton #4 Country School, then attended Aurelia Schools, then Alta Community School in Alta and went to high school at Hy-View north of Alta.

On December 8, 1953, Virgil entered the United States Army, where he served his country with honor until his discharge as an SP3 on September 20, 1955.

Virgil was united in marriage to Myrtle Marie Patten on January 1, 1955 at First United Church in Sioux Rapids. They were blessed with two sons, Tim and Rick and a daughter, Brenda.

Virgil was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids, where he had held the offices of Elder, President and Treasurer. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #394 in Sioux Rapids. During the past two years, he served as financial officer for the Legion.

Virgil was a people person. He loved to visit with family, friends and even strangers, who soon became his friends. Virgil began golfing in his retirement years and found great pleasure in the game. He enjoyed playing cards, camping and going south to spend the winters. Virgil most loved his wife and family. Spending time with his children and grandchildren was his greatest joy. He loved to go watch his grandchildren’s ballgames. He will be remembered as a loving husband and devoted father and grandfather.
