Donald S. Brock - July 25, 1922 - Jan. 15, 2010

Donald S. Brock, age 87, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, died on Friday, January 15, 2010, at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer, Iowa.

Donald Samuel Brock, the son of Charley and Grace (Sassman) Brock, was born in Sioux Rapids, Iowa on July 25, 1922. Don lived his youth and received his education in Sioux Rapids, graduating from the Sioux Rapids High School with the Class of 1940. He faithfully served his country in the United States Army during World War II from November 12, 1942, to January 30, 1946.

On March 21, 1946, Don was united in marriage to Sylvia Naomi Brock in Jackson, Minnesota. This couple was blessed with four children: Doris, Donald, David and Denise. Sylvia died on May 6, 1996. Don was united in marriage to Lola Mae Weiland on September 15, 2004, and they enjoyed making their home in Sioux Rapids. Don worked for Hallet Construction for 4 years and then became a clerk at Kingans/Hygrade where he was employed for 34 years. He later worked at the Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids.

Don was a member of Faith Lutheran Church of Sioux Rapids for 57 years and participated in all of the church’s activities. He was very proud of the Sioux Rapids community and was a member of the Young At Heart Club, the Jolly Elders, the Dinner Date, and he had served on the Care Review Board at the Sioux Care Center. Don had many varied interests that included playing cribbage, playing cards, working crossword puzzles, watching television game shows and fishing. He was also an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins. Family was a very important part of Don’s life and he took a special interest in the lives of his grandchildren.

Don’s life and memory will always be cherished by his wife, Lola of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; his children: Doris Harvey of Rembrandt, Iowa; David and Rhonda Brock of Linn Grove, Iowa; Denise and Ken Harding of Topeka, Kansas; his step-children: Connie and Bill Wetherell of Sloan, Iowa; Allen and Debbie Weiland of Aurelia, Iowa; Dennis and Patty Weiland of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; Randy Weiland and his fiancé, Robbie Whittenberg of Linn Grove, Iowa; and Julie and Ron Anderson of Aurelia, Iowa; five grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; four great grandchildren; 13 step-great grandchildren; one brother and his wife: Dean and Melva Brock of Storm Lake, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and his many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sylvia; his step-mother, Charlotte; his son, Donald; two sisters: Mabel Brock and Luverne Brophy; and one brother, Arnold Brock.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Monday, January 18, 2010, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. Interment will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. Visitation, with the family present, will be on Sunday, January 17, 2010, from 2-4:00 p.m.at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home of Sioux Rapids is in charge arrangements.
