Elgie “Leo” Meyer - Apr. 23, 1912 - Aug. 15, 2005

Elgie “Leo” Meyer, age 93, died Monday, August 15, 2005 at Long house in Spencer.

Leo was born on April 23, 1912 on a farm west of Marathon to Albert and Ada (Zimmerman) Meyer. He was baptized and a member of the Marathon United Methodist Church for 80 years.

Leo worked with his parents on the farm and at a gas station before going in the Navy in 1944. He was a fireman 1st class. He was discharged December 26, 1945.

On June 1932 he married Verlette Olson. To this union Beverly and Betty were born. Verlette died July 28, 1946 and Leo married Crystal Halverson May 24, 1949.

Leo was an active member of the Marathon Methodist Church, a fireman, American Legion, VFW, Lions Club, mayor of Marathon for 27 years, and drove a school bus for 40 years. He had a garage and was a mechanic for 40 years. His hobbies were fishing, camping, traveling, and playing cards and horse shoes.

Preceding Leo in death were his parents Albert and Ada; wife Verlette; daughter Beverly; son-in-law Don Thompson; grandson Timothy Bland; brothers: Theodore, George, Joseph, and Donald; a sister Mrytle; and nieces and nephews: Sharon, Roberta, Marlene, and Vincent.

Leo is survived by wife Crystal; one daughter Betty and husband Cliff Hansen of Marathon, Iowa; grandchildren: Dawn Hansen and fiance Jim Valenti of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Brian Bland of St. Paul, Minnesota, Brenda Bland of Ruthven Jeanne Thompson of Browerville, Minnesota, Shawn Purcell and husband Dan of West Des Moines, Iowa, Candace Smith and husband Tobin of Jefferson, Iowa; nine great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; brother Frank; sisters: Evelyn Brown and Iva Boothby; sisters-in-law; Nellie Meyer and Violet Meyer; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Thursday, August 18, 2005 at United Methodist Church in Marathon, with Reverend Dave Schumann officiating. Burial will be at Poland Township Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Sliefert Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 17, 2005, at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Marathon.
