Gary L. Sliefert - June 12, 1942 - Aug. 18, 2005

Gary Lee Sliefert, 63, passed away on August 18, 2005 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, IA after a lengthy illness.

Gary was born on June 12, 1942 to Clifford and Alma (Garberding) Sliefert in Storm Lake, IA. He received his elementary education at South School. He graduated from Storm Lake Senior High on May 26, 1960. He attended Buena Vista College and graduated on May 31, 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in History and minoring in Secondary Education. He completed his formal education at Wisconsin Institute of Mortuary Science in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and graduated on July 23, 1965.

He was united in marriage to Sharon Hansen on August 16, 1964. Gary and Sharon are the parents of three children; Elizabeth, Donna, and Paula. Gary and Sharon were divorced in 1980.

Gary was the owner and operator of Sliefert Funeral Home for 37 years where he was a Funeral Director of four funeral homes located in Storm Lake, Sioux Rapids, Marathon, and Albert City, Iowa. He retired in October 2001. He was a member of the Iowa Funeral Directors Association for 40 years and was appointed to the Mortuary Science Examiners Board by Governor Robert Ray. His term on the Board began May 1, 1981 and he served for 9 years.

Gary displayed his love and generosity of family and community by donating two hospice rooms located at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in memory of his parents, Clifford & Alma Sliefert. Gary was involved in the community as a member of the Rotary Club in which he served as President in 1973 and was a member of the Serpaci Club where he served as President for one year. Gary was also a member of the BV Rifle & Pistol Club.

Gary was a life-long member of St. John Lutheran Church. He was baptized on July 5, 1942 and was confirmed on May 20, 1956. He served as a Church Trustee for 3 years.

Gary enjoyed many outdoor activities including; hunting, fishing, trap shooting, sporting clays along with woodworking and watching football. Gary’s most memorable moment in football was being named in high school to the Iowa All State Fourth Team Football Team as a Linebacker in 1960. He was also named to the First Team All Conference Football Team in 1962 while attending Buena Vista College. Gary was also a co-founder of the Storm Lake High School Athletic Booster Club, founded on December 1, 1983.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Alma Sliefert. Those surviving Gary are his three daughters, two sons-in-law, and two grandchildren; Elizabeth & Mike Green and their daughter Kylie and son Chase of Sioux Falls, SD, Donna & Gary Ronning of Sioux Falls, SD , and Paula Sliefert of Maple Grove, MN.

Gary cherished spending time with family and close friends. His good sense of humor and kind heart afforded him strong family bonds and friendships.
