Wm. Vernon McDeid - Apr. 13, 1913 - Aug. 19, 2005

Wm. Vernon McDeid, age 92, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa died Friday, August 19, 2005 in Sioux Rapids.

William Vernon McDeid was born April 13, 1913 in Storm Lake, Iowa, the son of William and Mary (Sassman) McDeid. His early years were spent on a farm northeast of Nemaha. He was baptized in the Methodist Church at Storm Lake and confirmed in the Methodist Church in Nemaha. He graduated from Nemaha High School with the Class of 1932.

On January 12, 1938, Vernon was married to Leila Oatman in the Lutheran Parsonage in Storm Lake. They were engaged in farming in the Nemaha and Albert City areas, and in 1946 they moved to a farm northeast of Sioux Rapids. They were the parents of five sons: Raynold, Gerald, Kennard, Michael and Patrick.

In 1976, Vernon and Leila retired and moved into Sioux Rapids. Their retirement years were spent traveling with their travel trailer. Twenty years were spent in warmer climates during the winters. Vernon enjoyed photography, fishing and reading in his free time.

He leaves to mourn his wife of 67 years, Leila of Sioux Rapids; his sons: Ray and wife Sharon of Spokane, Washington, Jerry and wife Sue of Warsaw, Illinois, Ken and wife Leona of Boone, Iowa, Pat and wife Connie of Deer Park, Washington and Mike and wife Lollie of Sioux Rapids; ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are Vernon’s brothers-in-law: Charles Berry of Cherokee, Iowa, Glenn and wife Pat Oatman of Corona, California and John and wife Joan Oatman of Storm Lake; sister-in-law Mardelle Brown of Onawa, Iowa; as well as many other extended family members and a host of friends.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary McDeid; sisters Alma McDeid, Altamae and husband Jim Goodin, Doris Berry and Marie and husband Boyd Beazley; brother-in-law Syril Brown and sister-in-law Velma Redenbaugh.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 24, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Church of Sioux Rapids, with Reverend Kris Frank officiating. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake, under the direction of the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids.

Friends may call on Tuesday, August 23, 2005 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids, where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
