Harlan King - Jan. 5, 1925 - Sept. 27, 2005
Harlan King, age 80, of Spencer, Iowa died Tuesday, September 27, 2005 at the Northshire Nursing Home in Spencer.
Harlan Jay King was born January 5, 1925 at Kingsley, Iowa to Silas L. and Lucy Amelia (McFarland) King. He spent his childhood years in his parents’ home at Peterson, Iowa, where he received his education in the Peterson school system.
Harlan entered the United States Army on December 15, 1945. He served with the 13th Engineer Battalion during the Korean conflict in Seoul, Korea. He was honorably discharged at the rank of private on February 12, 1947.
On January 19, 1947, Harlan was united in marriage to Jean Goetschius at Newell, Iowa. They were blessed with six children: Richard, Harla, Shirley, Timothy, JoLee and Mary.
Harlan was employed as a farm worker, at a rendering plant, the co-op elevator and with Buena Vista County during his lifetime. He retired in February 1987 after heart surgery. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, horseshoes and bowling. He loved watching baseball and football. He was an umpire for Little League baseball games in Linn Grove. Harlan was a member of American Legion Post 394 in Sioux Rapids for 29 years.
A long-time member of the Lutheran Church, Harlan was baptized at Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland, Iowa on February 9, 1951 and confirmed in that same church on February 11, 1951. He was a faithful member of Faith Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids, where he had served on the church council and as an usher.
Survivors include his sons, Richard L. King of Rembrandt, Iowa and Timothy P. King of Havelock, Iowa; daughters Harla Malz of Belle Plaines, Minnesota, Shirley Swearingen of Lake Havasu, Arizona and JoLee J. Fassler of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; grandchildren: Richard G. King, Nicole King, Wanda Burnley, Tanya Swearingen, Jenna Lowder, Brad Weishaar, Marc Weisharr, Casey King, Caylee King, Cadi King, Michelle Fassler and Megan Fassler; sister Della Appel of LeMars, Iowa; as well as many extended family members and friends.
Harlan was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Jean King and daughter Mary E. King.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 1, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home Chapel in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, with Pastor LeRoy Riemer from Faith Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sioux Rapids American Legion will be at Lone Tree Cemetery. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home for one hour prior to the funeral service on Saturday.
