Reverend Douglas W. Haynes - Aug. 8, 1945 - Dec. 18, 2005

Reverend Douglas W. Haynes, age 60, of Storm Lake, Iowa was called to his Heavenly Home on Sunday, December 18, 2005 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Douglas Warren Haynes was born August 8, 1945 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to William and Clara (Kleinsteiber) Haynes. He was baptized as an infant, and then confirmed at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. Since the age of six years, his ambition has been to serve the Lord as a pastor.

Pastor Haynes received his primary education in Milwaukee, where he graduated from West Division High School. He entered Concordia College in Milwaukee and graduated in 1966. In 1968, the aspiring pastor graduated from Concordia Senior College in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Following his 1972 graduation from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Haynes became pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Crete, Nebraska. In 1976, he accepted a call to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Valentine, Nebraska and Zion Lutheran Church in Crookston, Nebraska. From 1980 until 1982, Pastor Haynes served as associate pastor at Oklahoma Avenue Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. From 1982 until 1996, he served as pastor at Monona Evangelical Lutheran Church in Monona, Wisconsin. He was installed at St. John Lutheran in Storm Lake on December 8, 1996 and served this congregation until his death. Pastor Haynes has also served as Circuit Counselor and LWML Zone Counselor.

On August 2, 1969, Douglas Haynes was united in marriage to Barbara Rauwald at Ascension Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Their union was blessed with three children. Daughter Brenda and son Jason were twins, born November 1976. Jason died two days later and is buried in Valentine, Nebraska. Son Keith was born in 1979 in Valentine.

Pastor Haynes was a loving husband and devoted father whose family was very important to him. He enjoyed traveling, liked everything about cars, found movies to be relaxing and was a wrestling fan. Pastor worked tirelessly to serve his Lord and Savior, and the people in his congregations. His purpose in the ministry was based on Ephesians 4:12. He explained this as “helping people to love one another in Christ and to work together.”

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Barbara, of Alta, Iowa; daughter Brenda (Eric) Gerken of St. Petersburg, Florida; son Keith Haynes of Columbus, Ohio; grandson Jayson; extended family members, members of his congregations over the years, and countless friends from all walks in life. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, with Reverend Henry Kuhn officiating. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake.

Friends may call on Tuesday, December 20, 2005 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present.
