Paul Francis Vaughn - Dec. 17, 1918 - Jan. 8, 2010
Paul Francis Vaughn, age 91, departed this life on January 8, 2010 at Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake after a lingering illness.
Paul graduated May 20, 1937 from Storm Lake High School. After graduating, Paul went to Montana to try out the cowboy lifestyle. After returning to Storm Lake, he tried his hand at working in the movie theater and then managing. Paul enjoyed reel to reel movies and music; he worked at radio stations including Fort Dodge.
Paul joined the Storm Lake Fire Department, the job he loved for the next 23 years. He especially remembered the fire of “Old Main” on the campus of Buena Vista College. Also, the big fire that destroyed Vilas Company, where he and fellow firemen got blown across the railroad track.
Later he worked as a custodian at North School and the Junior High in Storm Lake. Paul was interested in maintaining quality in his job and took numerous continuing education courses.
Traveling 48 states and taking photos and developing photos were very enjoyable for Paul.
He was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Fireman Association, Iowa Association of Custodians, Democratic State Central Committee, American Legion, and also a Moose member for over 60 years, and the Moose Legion.
Paul was born to James and Anna (Sliefert) Vaughn on December 17, 1918. He was the youngest of three. Paul was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Gladys Preston and Lucille Haarup; and his nephew, David Preston. Paul is survived by Phyllis Oleary and many cousins, special friends Trudie and Ken Nord and many others.
Funeral mass will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 11, 2010 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-5:00 p.m., Sunday, January 10, 2010 at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
