Dorothy May Gammon - Jan. 17, 1919 - May 24, 2008

Dorothy May Gammon, age 89, of Albert City, Iowa, died on Saturday, May 24, 2008, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center at Storm Lake, Iowa.

Dorothy May Hurst, the daughter of Ralph and Stella (Brown) Hurst was born on January 17, 1919, in Des Moines, Iowa. As a very young child, she moved with her parents and her sister to Los Angeles, California. She attended and graduated from the John Muir Junior High School and the Horace Mann High School in Los Angeles. She continued her education and received her cosmetology license and also secretarial training. She was employed by Hughes Aircraft Corporation.

Dorothy was united in marriage to William Franklin Gammon on November 25, 1953, in Los Angeles, California. They were blessed with two children: Lynne and Bill, Jr. The central focus of her life was being a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandma/nana/G-G. In earlier years, Dorothy and William enjoyed ballroom and square dancing. Dorothy took an active interest in her children’s activities and she served as a Cub Scout leader. As a family, they enjoyed many activities that included sailing, camping, motorcycling, fishing, and visiting western national parks. She was also an avid fan and follower of her son’s motocross racing. Sewing was also another special interest of Dorothy’s. In later years, she and William loved going to the Lawrence Welk Village for overnight stays and to enjoy a meal and musical performance. Dorothy had a pure and beautiful singing voice and singing and music were always a part of her life. She will be remembered as a marvelous cook and enjoyed trying and collecting recipes. Dorothy also received much enjoyment from reading. She and William resided at their home in Upland, California, for 50 years. In August, 2006, they moved to Albert City where they were residents of Pleasant View Home.

Those who are grateful for having shared in her life include her husband of 54 years, William Sr., of Albert City, Iowa, her children: Lynne and Allen Romo of Albert City, Iowa and William F., Jr. and Joanne Gammon of Ontario, California, her grandchildren: Todd and Lori Romo, Kristi and Bruce Blomberg and Brittany Gammon, her great grandchildren: Jessica and Justin Romo and Isabella, Alexandra, and Elizabeth Blomberg, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Ralph Hurst, Jr. at birth, a sister: Florence (Hurst) Berry, and a nephew: Ben Berry.

Services for Dorothy will be held Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church at 1:30 p.m. in Albert City with Reverend David Bernhardt officiating. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of arrangements.

She will be greatly missed by her family and those whose lives she touched, but her memory will live on in their hearts.
