Richard Lee Nelson, the son of Nelvin and Olga (Otteson) Nelson, of Linn Grove, Iowa, was born July 27, 1945 in Storm Lake, Iowa. He was baptized, confirmed and remained a life-long member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Linn Grove. Richard attended Sioux Valley Community School, graduating in 1963. He completed studies at National Business Training College in Sioux City and returned to the family farm, where he worked until entering the US Army in January 1967. He served for seven years in the Army Security Agency, stationed in the Philippine Islands, Vietnam, and Germany, achieving the rank of SP5. He was honorably discharged in March 1974.

Richard returned to Linn Grove where he farmed with his father and brother. On November 22, 1980, he was united in marriage to Nancy Rock at Trinity Lutheran Church. They made their home on the family farm, where they were blessed with two children, Aaron and Anna. In 2003, Rich began driving truck part time for Huberg Trucking of Royal, while continuing to farm.

Richard was active in his church and served with the honor guard of the Linn Grove Legion Post. Always willing to lend a helping hand, or take time for a good conversation with friends, his kindness, sense of humor, and sincerity were admired by all who knew him. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his children and grandson. They, in turn, considered him their hero and best friend.

Richard passed away suddenly on August 14, 2008, at the age of 63. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nelvin and Olga; father-in-law Joseph Rock; nephew Brian Nelson; and brother-in-law Larry Raveling.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; his son, Aaron and Tanya Nelson and their son, Andrew Lee, all of Linn Grove; his daughter, Anna Nelson; mother-in-law Vivian Rock; brother Bernard and Maxine Nelson of Linn Grove; sisters: Nelda Nelson of Storm Lake; Carolyn and Francis Kies of Storm Lake; Dianne and Tom Petty of Sioux Rapids, Linda Raveling of Wayne, Nebraska; Janice and Ed Nelson of Ida Grove, Iowa; brother-in-law Jim and Margaret Rock of Peterson; uncle Arlo Nelson of Alta, Iowa; aunt Dorrene Wingerson of Wilkesboro, North Carolina; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.
