Gladys M. “Gladdy” Wellmerling - May 26, 1923 - Sept. 9, 2008

Gladys M. “Gladdy” Wellmerling, age 85, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, died on Tuesday, September 9, 2008, at the Sioux Care Center at Sioux Rapids, Iowa.

Gladys Maurine Glienke, the daughter of William and Emma (Langner) Glienke, was born at Storm Lake, Iowa, on May 26, 1923. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Gladdy lived her youth and received her education in the Truesdale vicinity, graduating from Truesdale High School in 1941.

Gladdy was united in marriage to Claire H. “Simmy” Wellmerling on June 2, 1956, at Ringsted, Iowa. The couple was blessed with one daughter, Debra. Throughout their married lifetime, Simmy and Gladdy were engaged in farming near Rembrandt. Gladdy also was employed for many years as a sales clerk at the Woman’s Shop in Storm Lake.

Gladdy was an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Rembrandt, where she had taught Sunday School and had served as president of the church’s women’s group, WELCA. She had also belonged to the Merry Matrons social club and the American Legion Auxiliary #394. Gladdy was an avid bowler and enjoyed participating in her Thursday night bowling league in Sioux Rapids.

Those who will always love, honor, and cherish her memory include her daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Kevin Hanson of Arlington, Texas; her grandson, Skyler Hanson of Arlington, Texas; her brother and sister-in-law, Everett and Vera Glienke of Webb, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and her many friends.

Gladdy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Claire “Simmy” Wellmerling, on December 7, 2002; and two sisters, Evelyn and Marian.

Gladdy will be deeply missed by her family and fondly remembered by her many friends.

Services for Mrs. Wellmerling will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Rembrandt, Iowa, with Reverend Mark Youngquist officiating. Burial will be in Lone Tree Cemetery at Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call Friday, September 12th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids, where the family will be present.
