Herman “Bill” Engebretson - Sept. 25, 1910 - Sept. 14, 2008

Herman “Bill” Engebretson, age 97, of Linn Grove, Iowa, died Sunday, September 14, 2008, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa.

Herman “Bill” Gehard Engebretson, the son of Aksel and Thebe (Haroldson) Engebretson, was born on the family farm near Linn Grove on September 25, 1910. Bill was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Linn Grove, baptized on February 12, 1911 and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith in 1925.

Bill lived his youth and received his education in the Linn Grove area, graduating from Linn Grove High School in 1929. While he was in high school, Bill drove a school bus for the students. Following his high school graduation, he attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa for one year, where he enjoyed playing football during his freshman year. He was not able to continue his college education because the Great Depression was underway, dictating that he return to the family farm to began his life’s vocation as a farmer.

Bill was united in marriage to Martha Ellen Glenny on August 28, 1948, at Jackson, Minnesota. The couple was blessed with one daughter, Joyce Ann. In addition to corn and beans, Bill and Martha Ellen also raised hogs, cattle, and chickens and harvested many crops of hay. The Engebretsons retired from farming in 1973. Martha Ellen became a resident of the St. Luke’s Lutheran Home in Spencer in 1997, and died there on August 17, 1997. Bill came to make his home at St. Luke’s in August of 1999.

Bill was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Linn Grove. Bill’s special interests included playing bridge and bowling. Even during his retirement years, Bill continued to keep abreast of agricultural issues. He was interested in current farming practices and state and federal legislation that impacted the prices of commodities. Bill enjoyed his summer visits to his farm. Farming was always an integral part of Bill’s life.

He will be lovingly and fondly remembered by his daughter, Joyce Ann of Clear Lake, Iowa; one niece, two nephews, several great-nieces and great-nephews, and his many friends.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Martha Ellen; four brothers: Art, Everett, and George, and one brother who died as an infant; his sister, Martha; his niece, Sandra Rae Engebretson; and his nephew, Alan Engebretson.

Funeral services for Mr. Engebretson will be held on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Linn Grove, with Reverend Mark Youngquist officiating. Burial will follow in Barnes Township Cemetery at Linn Grove. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids, Iowa is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Tuesday, September 16, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids.
