Clara Stanley-Mitchell - Aug. 20, 1940 - Sept. 25, 2008

Clara Stanley-Mitchell, age 68, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Thursday, September 25, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Clara Maude Nielsen, the daughter of Eugene and Luvia (Kerr) Nielsen, was born at Winterset, Iowa, on August 20, 1940. Clara lived her youth and received her education at Winterset, graduating from Winterset High School.

On May 25, 1958, Clara was united in marriage to Earl Edward Stanley in Winterset. The couple was blessed with nine children: Margo, Mark, Miriam, Myron, Marsena, Lisa, Linda, Larry and Jerry. Following their marriage, Earl and Clara lived in Des Moines, Iowa, and later moved to the state of Wyoming for a short period of time. They returned to Des Moines, then came to make their home in Storm Lake in 1968.

While residing in Storm Lake, Clara was a daycare provider prior to working at Wilson’s in Cherokee. For the past 28 years, Clara has been a real estate broker and currently owned and operated Stanley Real Estate. Earl died on May 31, 1986. On December 29, 2000, Clara was united in marriage to Edwin “Hank” Mitchell in Storm Lake. Clara and Hank enjoyed their married life in Storm Lake.

Clara was a member of the Iowa Association of Realtors. She enjoyed painting and will be remembered by her family and friends for being a collector of many items, including stamps and Fenton dishes. Clara’s family was a very important part of her life, and she cherished the times she could spend with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those who will always honor and cherish her memory include her husband: Edwin “Hank” Mitchell of Storm Lake; her children: Mark and Sandy Stanley of Storm Lake, Iowa; Miriam Carlson and Steve Schiltz of Remsen, Iowa; Myron Stanley and Terri Hatlen of Storm Lake; Marsena and James Hubbard of Spencer, Iowa; Lisa and Jeff Naslund of Galva, Iowa; Linda and Steve Harvey of Royal, Iowa; Larry and Shyla Stanley of Sanborn, Iowa; Jerry and Maryann Stanley of Owatonna, Minnesota; her foster children: Sandra Rhodes of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Rowland Mousseau of Denver, Colorado; 20 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, other relatives, business associates, and many friends.

Clara was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Earl; and an infant daughter, Margo.

Services for Mrs. Stanley-Mitchell will be held on Tuesday, September 30, 2008, at 1:30 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday evening, September 29th, at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present. The Sliefert Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of arrangements.
