Evelyn Honsbruch, age 87, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Wednesday, August 13, 2008, at Methodist Manor Care Center in Storm Lake.

Evelyn Edna Stief, the daughter of Alfred and Minnie (Sump) Stief was born in Spring Township, Cherokee County, near Aurelia, Iowa, on June 4, 1921. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Afton Township, near Aurelia and confirmed in that church on July 12, 1936. Evelyn lived her youth and received her education in the Aurelia area, graduating from Brooke High School in 1939.

Evelyn was united in marriage to Adrian Honsbruch on December 7, 1944, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church at Aurelia by Pastor O. Braunschweig. In February of 1945, Evelyn joined Adrian in Amarillo, Texas, where they resided together until the end of World War II. They returned to the Aurelia area following Adrian’s honorable discharge in September and began their farming vocation.

Evelyn and Adrian’s marriage was blessed with three children: Janet, Roger, and Darla. Evelyn was a loving and devoted wife and mother and enjoyed raising her children on the farm and assisting Adrian in their farming operation in Elk Township, Buena Vista County, Iowa. In January of 1972, they moved to Storm Lake, where Evelyn was employed at Ressler Drug and Adrian served as the sexton of the Storm Lake Cemetery until July 1, 1982. Adrian died in 1994. Evelyn came to make her home at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake on February 21, 1999.

Evelyn had a deep and abiding faith and had been a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church at Aurelia and later became a member at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. She was active within her church, serving as a church organist, singing in the church choir, and participating in the women’s organizations. While residing at Aurelia, Evelyn had been a member of a women’s club whose membership was comprised of area farm wives. Evelyn’s special interests included gardening, quilting, and doing various types of handwork. Evelyn shared her musical gifts with others by playing an accordion when she was younger. Evelyn’s activities and interests always revolved around her family as she shared in their lives. Her grandchildren will forever cherish the memories they have of spending a week during the summertime with their grandparents.

Those who have been blessed by Evelyn’s life include her children: Janet and Dale Stearns of Parkersburg, Iowa; Roger and Pat Honsbruch of Sioux City, Iowa; and Darla and Terry Johnson of Jefferson, Iowa; her grandchildren: Michelle (Ravi) Mahadevan and Sara Stearns, all of Parkersburg, Iowa; Gregory (Megann) Honsbruch of West Lafayette, Indiana; Brent Honsbruch of Parachute, Colorado; Kelsey Honsbruch of Sioux City, Iowa; Anjanette (Wes) Treadway of Carroll, Iowa; Justin Johnson of West Des Moines, Iowa; and Trisha Johnson of Waukee, Iowa; her great-grandchildren: Carter, Keira, and Kaylie Honsbruch and Bryton Treadway; two sisters-in-law: Aleda Stief of Aurelia, Iowa; and Ora Honsbruch of Alta, Iowa; other relatives and friends.
