William Franklin Gammon, Sr. - Mar. 10, 1920 - Nov. 2, 2008

William Franklin Gammon, Sr., age 88, of Albert City, Iowa, died Sunday, November 2, 2008 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

William Franklin Gammon, the son of Lester William and Alma (Caley) Gammon was born on March 10, 1920 in Littleton, Colorado. He was baptized and at the time of his death was a member of the Dutch Christian Reformed Church in California. He graduated from high school and later went on to become an electronics engineer. During World War II he served in the United States Army. As an electronics engineer, he was employed by General Electric and worked with testing gyroscopes for engines for commercial jet aircraft. He retired from GE when he was 75 years of age.

William married Dorothy May Hurst on November 25, 1953 in Los Angeles, California. Their family included two children: Lynne and William, Jr. (after whose birth, William was proud to be designated as “senior”). He went by Bill until his later years when he preferred to be called William.

William was a member of the American Legion, the Good Sam Club, HAM Operators of America, a motorcycle club and a church couples group. He was also an Indian Guide leader. He loved spending his spare time with his family with whom he enjoyed visiting National Parks, hiking, camping, fishing and photography. He was an avid sailor and downhill skier and for many years was on the ski patrol rescue team. He also enjoyed being a HAM radio operator and talking with people around the world.

In earlier years, he and Dottie enjoyed square dancing and ballroom dancing and taking excursions with a motorcycle club. He rode motorcycles nearly all of his adult life, and he shared that love with his family. He enjoyed collecting coins and books and particularly liked National Geographic magazine.

William played the clarinet and alto saxophone in the high school band and the US Army Band and at one point considered a career in music.

He and Dorothy lived at their home in Upland, California for 50 years. William was devoted to Dottie and took her out for breakfast every morning for many of their last years together. Another favorite was their trips to Lawrence Welk Village for dinner theater. In August 2006 they moved to Pleasant View Home in Albert City, where they were close to their daughter, Lynne.

William was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandpa and GGpa, and he will be greatly missed by his family. He left us with a wonderful example of strength of character, generosity, love, fun, courage and grace.

Those who are grateful for having shared in his life include his children: Lynne and Allen Romo of Albert City, Iowa and William F., Jr. and Joanne Gammon of Ontario, California; his grandchildren: Todd and Lori Romo, Kristi and Bruce Blomberg and Brittany Gammon; his great grandchildren: Jessica and Justin Romo and Isabella, Alexandra, and Elizabeth Blomberg; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Doyle Zeiler, and his beloved wife, Dorothy, on May 24, 2008.

Memorial services for Mr. Gammon will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 7, 2008 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Albert City. Burial will be at a later date. A time of visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the start of the memorial service. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
