Elmer H. Anderson, 88, of South Sioux City, Nebraska and formerly of Marathon, Iowa, passed away Wednesday morning, November 5, 2008.

Elmer was born May 1, 1920 in Curlew, Iowa, the son of John H. and Alma C. (Gustafson) Anderson. He attended school in Marathon. At a young age, he started farming with his father and then took over the family farm. He loved working his land and was a faithful son, brother and uncle.

For more than 20 years, Elmer worked for the Buena Vista ASCS office in Storm Lake, Iowa. He also collected antique John Deere tractors and was a member of the 2-Cylinder Club.

Elmer was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon. He was a faithful church member and served on various boards at the church. He also served on the Elevator board in Marathon. He enjoyed having coffee with his friends.

In March 2006, Elmer moved to Matney Assisted Living in South Sioux City so he could be closer to his nieces and nephew. Elmer enjoyed reading, playing bingo, sitting outside in the sun and hearing from his neighbors and friends back home in Marathon.

Survivors include his nieces: Kathy (Ken) Gries and Sharon Hiserote of Sioux City, Iowa; Phyllis (Rich) Pennington, Hinton, Iowa; and his nephew Rich (Betty) Benson of Remsen, Iowa. Other survivors include great nieces and nephews: Karen Gries, Keith Gries, Dan Hiserote, Jim Hiserote, Sue Ann Hardin, Jon Pennington, Justin Pennington, Mary Benson, Matthew Benson and Michael Benson; plus 18 great-great-nieces and nephews. We will all miss Uncle Elmer.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters and their husbands: Judith and Nathaniel Lundquist and Lillian and Oscar Benson.

Services for Mr. Anderson will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 7, 2008 at Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon, Iowa, with Rev. Tammy Anderson officiating. A time of visitation will be held at the church with family present for one hour prior to the start of the service. As per his wishes, Elmer was cremated. His remains will be buried at the Marathon Cemetery and sprinkled at his farm.
