Helen Simon - May 26, 1920 - Nov. 28, 2008

Helen Simon, age 88, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa passed away on Friday, November 28, 2008 at the Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids, where she had lived for the past couple of years.

Helen Marie Simon was the second oldest of seven children born to John and Agnes (Prew) Mueller. She was born May 26, 1920, at Peterson, Iowa. She attended school at Peterson, graduating with the class of 1937. On November 30, 1939, she was united in marriage to Amos Simon of Sioux Rapids.

They made their home for 67 years in and around the Sioux Rapids farming community and were blessed with six children: Carol (Bob) Stoop of Henderson, Nevada; Ken Simon of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Dick Simon of Havelock, Iowa; Darwin (Jackie Elfman) Simon of Des Moines, Iowa; Virginia (Tom) Rabel of Fostoria, Iowa; and Bonnie Somers of McKinney, Texas.

Helen was an active church member at St. Joseph’s Parish in Sioux Rapids. She taught 2nd grade CCD for 12 years, served as Parish Representative of the ‘Parish in the Council of Catholic Women’ for 30 years, and she served as Deanery President and Diocesan Secretary. Helen was also one of the original members of the Sioux Rapids ‘ODO’ Club.

Helen has spent the past three and one-half years at the Sioux Care Center. She passed away on Friday, November 28, 2008 at the age of 88.

Preceding her in death were her parents; two sisters; three brothers; her husband, Amos, who passed away in March of 2007; two grandchildren, Mary Louise and Richard Dale; a great grandson, Nicholas Thomas; and a daughter-in-law, Barbara Simon.

Left to cherish her memory are her children; twelve grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; one sister, Frances (Eldon) Carlson of Spirit Lake, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, plus a host of friends. She was a devoted and loving wife and mother and took great delight in her children and grandchildren.

Helen will be missed by many, as she was a caring and giving person, always ready to help anyone in need.

Funeral mass was held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 1, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sioux Rapids, with Father Al Reicks as celebrant. Burial will be in Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids was in charge of the arrangements. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, November 30, 2008 at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids.
