Marjorie A. Johanson - Oct. 10, 1922 - Dec. 14, 2008

Marjorie A. Johanson, age 86, of Marathon, Iowa, died Sunday, December 14, 2008 at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Albert City, Iowa.

Marjorie A. Erickson, the daughter of Joseph Frank and Elsie Marie (Gummow) Erickson, was born at Galva, Iowa, on October 10, 1922. Marge’s early years were spent in the Galva and Schaller, Iowa areas. Following her mother’s death and her father becoming ill, Marge made her home with her aunt and uncle, Singne and Harry Couch, in Marathon. She received her education in Marathon, graduating from Marathon High School in 1941. During World War II, Marge worked in the Peterson Store and wrote the “At Random” column for the Marathon Republic newspaper.

In 1949, Marge was united in marriage to Harry Johanson at Jackson, Minnesota. The couple was blessed with two children, Lynn Steven and Susan Diane. Following their marriage, Harry and Marge began farming south of Marathon. Marge also had worked as a teller at Citizens First National Bank in Marathon for many years.

Marge was a long-time member of Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon, where she shared her musical talents by singing in the church choir for many years. She enjoyed antiques, cooking, taking part in community activities and spending time with her family. Marge will be remembered as being a very kind and generous person who was loved and appreciated by everyone who knew her.

Those who will always cherish memories of Marge include her children: Lynn and Joyce Johanson of Macomb, Illinois and Susan and Greg Allen of Lincoln, Nebraska; her three grandchildren: Aaron and Amanda Johanson of Macomb, Illinois; Erikka Johanson of Miami, Florida; and Trevor Johanson of Edwardsville, Illinois; two great-grandchildren, Janissa Rockstadt and Klara Johanson; her sister, Colleen Hart of Spencer, Iowa; many nieces and nephews, and her many friends.

Marge was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Elsie; her husband, Harry, on September 26, 1997; two sisters, Frances and Nancy; and one brother, Allen.

Funeral services for Mrs. Johanson will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 17, 2008, at Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon, Iowa. Interment will be Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. The Sliefert Funeral Home of Albert City is in charge of arrangements.

Friends may call on Tuesday, December 16, 2008, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon, where, the family present during the entire visitation time.

Memorials in Marge’s honor may be directed to the Marathon Community Center or Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon.
