C.R. "Kip" Anderson - Aug. 12, 1916 - Jan. 21, 2009

Kip Anderson, age 92, died Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Clifford Raymond was born to Carl and Christine (Englund) Anderson on August 12, 1916, in Albert City, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albert City, Kippy came from a family of 13 children. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Albert City High School in 1934.

On August 11, 1940, Kip was united in marriage to Doris Irene Grau of Newell, Iowa. Their first child, Mary Ann, was born while Kip was serving in the 16th Army Corps in the European Theatre during World War II. After his return from the war, he owned and operated The A. C. Cafe in Albert City and a son John (J.B.) was born.

Kip is best known locally as “the Standard Oil man”. He formed Kip’s Oil, Inc., owning bulk stations and delivery services - a career which resulted in not just customers but life-long friends. Kip was involved in the community where he served on school and church boards. He was also active in the American Legion, Lions Club and Elks Club. He was an avid sportsman: a loyal supporter of school athletic events, a coach for little league, and a referee for high school basketball throughout northwest Iowa.

Kip worked hard and made maximum use of his free time with golf, fishing, cards, and woodworking. He and Irene had many happy retirement years with homes in Nevis, Minnesota, Ellenton, Florida, and Storm Lake.

Kip genuinely enjoyed people. He treated nieces and nephews to rides on the oil truck and played a perfect Santa Claus. He was known by the children of his customers as “the gum man” and always had a special coin in his pocket for lucky kids. His outgoing, fun personality touched friends and family. His Swedish stories are famous. His creative nicknames are legendary. Kip and Irene danced their way through life in Iowa, Minnesota, and Florida.

He lived life fully and will be remembered by friends and family around the world for the more than 1400 wood crosses he enjoyed making and giving. Kip was preceded in death by his parents, 11 siblings, and one great-great grandson. Cherishing his memory are his wife of 68 years, Irene, of Lake Pointe Villa; his daughter, Mary Ann Garwood and her husband Richard of North Palm Beach, Florida; his son, John Anderson and his wife Bonnie of Maple Plain, Minnesota; grandsons Ben Anderson and Dan Anderson of Minneapolis, Minnesota; granddaughter Gwen Chianella and family of Collierville, Tennessee; grandson Greg Garwood and family of Charlottesville, Virginia; one sister Adelia Roberts of Albert City, many special nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27th at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church at 1614 West 5th Street. Inurnment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, January 26th at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home at 1615 West Milwaukee Street in Storm Lake. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, your thoughts and prayers are appreciated.
