Wallace “Wally” Pyle, age 86, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center.
Wallace Marion Pyle was born March 4, 1922, to Edward and Edith (Petty) Pyle in Butler, Missouri. He grew up in Missouri and Iowa. His family settled in Maxwell, Iowa where he graduated in 1940 from Maxwell High School. Wally joined the Army Air Force where he served stateside during WWII. After his military service, he attended college at AIB School of Business in Des Moines for two years.
On November 9, 1944, Wally was united in marriage to Enid Ford in Baltimore, Maryland. This union was blessed with three children: Steve, Bob, and Carol. Wally was employed as store manager of Iowa Paint in Des Moines for many years until his retirement in 1985.
Wally loved sports - he enjoyed playing when he was younger and watching his grandkids play in recent years. He took pleasure in watching sports on TV, especially his favorite teams the St. Louis Cardinals and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Wally enjoyed reading, fishing, and being outdoors. He was a loyal friend to many and liked to spend time visiting with people. Wally served as a City Councilman for the city of Lakeside, was a member of the Lake Preservation Association, and was a volunteer driver for the Veterans Association.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 64 years, Enid; children: Steve and Katherine Pyle of Hertford, North Carolina, Bob and Kathy Pyle of Iowa City, Iowa, and Carol Havens of Storm Lake, Iowa; grandchildren: Stacey (Ryan) Cooper, Nicolle (Eric) Weeks, Steven Pyle, Jr., Kristie Pyle, Scott (Lauren) Havens, Kurt Havens and special friend Jenny Pena, and Paige Havens; great-grandchildren: Shealyn and Sarah Cooper, Taylor, Justin and Shawn Weeks, and Leo Navarrete; two brothers: Dale Pyle of Maxwell, Iowa and Loyd (Pat) Pyle of Orange City, Florida; two sisters-in-law: Luine Lewis of Adel, Iowa and Lila Pyle of Seattle, Washington; along with other relatives and a great many friends.
Wally was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers: Ray and Lyle.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, January 25, 2009 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Entombment will be at Chapel Hill Gardens in Des Moines, Iowa.
Visitation will be 4-6:00 p.m., Saturday, January 24, 2009 at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, where the family will be present to greet friends. Arrangements are under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. In Lieu of Flowers, memorial may be made to the Storm Lake Athletic Boosters.
