Nyles E. "Bud" Myers - Oct. 02, 1932 - Feb. 03, 2009
Nyles Eugene “Bud” Myers arrived on planet Earth shortly after the birth of his sister and wombmate Nyla Colleen on October 2, 1932. They were born on their family’s farm in Steele Township, Daviess County, Indiana, twins of Fluard “Preach” and Helen Myers.
It was on the farm that Bud was introduced to hard work. At a very early age Bud was working a team of horses to plow the sand hills of southern Indiana to prepare them for growing corn and beans. During harvest the family picked corn by hand and pitched the harvested corn into a horse-drawn wagon. Bud also worked with other livestock on the farm, mainly cattle, sheep, and hogs. Bud was also a Boy Scout and attended the Cornettsville Methodist Church not far from their home.
Bud attended first grade through his senior year in high school at Plainville, Indiana. His enthusiasm for sports developed when he played basketball for the “Midgets” during an era where they shot under-handed free throws and set shots from the outside. He was president of his 1950 senior class (ten students) and enjoyed a great many “extra-curricular” activities during this period as well.
Bud worked for a year right out of high school on the farm and then enrolled at Purdue University where he majored on Animal Science and was on the Livestock Judging team. He was also a member of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, Air Force ROTC, and was a regular at Purdue football and basketball games.
On December 27, 1953, Bud married Erma Williams, daughter of John and Evelyn Williams of Washington, Indiana.
Upon graduation from Purdue in 1955, Bud was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force and was stationed at F.E. Warren Air Force base where their son, Jeff, was born.
Bud was honorably discharged from the Air Force and began work as a livestock buyer for Kingan and Company of Indianapolis in 1958. While in Indianapolis, Bud and Erma had two more children, daughters Jane (1959) and Lori (1963).
Bud attended the Indianapolis 500 and Indiana State Fair nearly every year while in Indianapolis. He also attended several Indiana State Basketball tournaments. Bud was always up for historical event or some special or significant entertainment as witnessed by the fact that he took Jeff and Jane to see the Beatles at the Indiana State Fair in September 1964.
Around 1962, Kingan and Company was purchased by Hygrade and in 1966, the family moved to Storm Lake as Bud continued his role as a livestock buyer. Later on, Hygrade closed and Bud worked for IBP for just over a year and then was hired by the Citizen’s First National Bank as an agricultural loan officer. Bud retired from Citizens as a vice-president in 1992.
During retirement Bud continued to work as a bus driver for Storm Lake and Alta Community Schools and mowed a variety of lots, yards, and fields for fun and profit.
Bud served in a variety of civic and fraternal organizations including the Lions Club, Toastmasters, Masons, Kiwanis and was an elder at Lakeside Presbyterian Church. Bud was also a Sunday school teacher and Scout Master for Troop 104 for a few years. He was very inquisitive and enjoyed learning about history, flying, and the space program. He spent many hours surfing the web and emailing friends and family across the country. His passions included golf, sailing, mowing, trees, the lake, politics, and of course his family and friends.
Bud married Marlene (Wedeking) Lenz on March 16, 1990 in Storm Lake. Bud and Marlene enjoyed their 18 years together with family and friends at home on the lake. They also traveled the world together seeing Europe, Scandinavia, Alaska, Hawaii, Australia, and much of the continental United States. They also attended many basketball games in Sac City, where Bud always had something to say to the men in stripes.
Bud earned his wings, departed planet Earth and left on his journey to the stars in the early morning of February 3, 2009.
He is survived by his wife Marlene; children: Jeff of Newell, Jane and Tony Smith of Nemaha, Lori and Gary McCall of Des Moines, Tom and Carol Lange of Sac City and Jeff and Dana Lenz of Hinton, Iowa; grandchildren: Gary, Paul, Elaine, Brittany, Tyler, Jenna, Kristina, Alison and Marissa. Brothers and sisters include Alan and Anna Lou Myers of Lexington, Kentucky, Jim and Nyla (Myers) Tillotson of Henderson, Kentucky, Phil and Beryl Myers of Plainville, Indiana, Louie and Sharon Myers of Odon, Indiana and Connie (Myers) Edwards of Plainville, Indiana; brother-in-law Martin Wedeking of Storm Lake; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Junior and Ronald, sister Barbara, and his first wife, Erma.
Memorial Services will be held at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake on Saturday, April 4th at 11:00 a.m. Internment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Lake Preservation project in Bud’s name.
