George Carpenter - Mar. 24, 1954 - Feb. 02, 2009
George Carpenter, age 54, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Monday, February 02, 2009 at Methodist Manor Care Center in Storm Lake.
George Gary Carpenter was born March 24, 1954 in Storm Lake, Iowa, the son of Garlan and Loreen (Rice) Carpenter. He was born with Down syndrome, but that circumstance never stopped George from loving his life and the people around him, and his family and friends in return loved George very much.
As a child, George attended special education classes in the Storm Lake Community School. He continued his life education at Genesis Development Quality Life, Inc., where he enjoyed his work and meeting new people. George, in fact, held three different jobs, all of which he was very proud and where he loved to go to work: Mangold’s, Lakeside Presbyterian Church and Genesis Development, all in Storm Lake.
George was a life long member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. He was baptized as an infant in 1954 and was confirmed as a youth in 1965. George served as a candle lighter in the church, a position he was very proud to hold.
George loved to travel with his family in their trailer. He visited family and friends and various United States sites. George was a truly exceptional person and his family and friends treasured the time they could spend with him. He will be deeply missed.
Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Loreen Carpenter of Storm Lake; his three sisters: Karen (Edward) Verdelotti of Vinton, Virginia; Gayle (Paul) Kennedy of Troutville, Virginia; Audrey (Charles) Olson of London, Arkansas; Reita Shugar of Storm Lake, his loving friend and companion; many wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins, and special, loving friends.
George was preceded in death by his father, Garlan Carpenter, and his grandmother, Vida Rice.
