Richard F. (Dick) Person was born December 8, 1923 on a farm northwest of Sibley, Iowa. He is the son of Leland Clark and Estella Mae (Bullington) Person. He received Jesus Christ as his personal savior when he was ten years old. He received his schooling at Sibley, graduating from high school in 1941. He continued his education at Northwestern Bible Institute in Minneapolis, MN. He received the J. Wilbur Chapman Scholarship for Spiritual Growth upon graduation from NWBI which provided for his
Seminary training.He was united in marriage with Ellen Friedrich at the First Baptist Church in Sibley, IA on August 25, 1945. He graduated from Northwestern Seminary in 1946 and began his pastoral ministry in Brainerd, MN on January 1, 1947.
Seeing the need for further education he resigned his church and the family moved to Abilene, TX. He continued his education at Hardin-Simmonds University. While attending graduate school he organized and pastored a mission church in Abilene. He was also the appliance manager in a local hardware store while attending school.
He and his family returned to Iowa after completing his schooling. He pastored Baptist churches in Climbing Hill, Emerson and Storm Lake, IA. The family then moved to South Dakota. He has been the pastor of the Baptist Church in Chancellor, SD, was the chaplain at the North American Baptist Home in Madison, SD, and for the last sixteen years of his active ministry he was the Visitation Pastor and coordinated the Senior Adults Ministries of the First Baptist Church in Sioux Falls, SD. He retired from active ministry on December 31, 2000.
He has been an avid student of the Scriptures since entering Northwestern in 1942. The verse he has claimed as the key verse to guide his life was a part of his reading assignment the first semester at Northwestern. “He (Jesus Christ) must increase, but I (self) must decrease” (John 3:30).
He has shared his life lovingly with his wife, Ellen of Sioux Falls, SD; three sons, Larry and his wife (Elda) Person of Sioux Falls, SD, Steve and his wife (Dori) Person of Walworth, WI, and Ron and his wife (Mona) Person of Portland, OR; sister, Dorothy Lorensen of Alden, TX; fifteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held 10:30 am Saturday, December 19, 2009, at First Baptist Church, Sioux Falls, SD. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 7:00 pm Friday. The family will be present to greet friends from 4:00 to 7:00 pm Friday, with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 Friday evening at Miller West Funeral Chapel, 6200 W. 41st Street, Sioux Falls.
Interment will be 3:00 Saturday afternoon at the Holman Township Cemetery, Sibley, Iowa.
