Ila Etoile Beers, 78, of Dubuque, Iowa and formerly of Storm Lake, Ila was born May 11, 1931 in Early, Iowa, daughter of Cecil and Etoile (Hein) Engler.

She graduated from Early, Iowa High School in 1948 and attended Iowa Teachers College and Buena Vista College, graduating in 1952. After graduating from college, she worked as a Spanish translator for Fort Dodge Laboratories. She then married Eugene Beers on December 5, 1954 in Early, Iowa and stayed home to raise her family. After retirement, she taught English as a second language classes. Eugene preceded her in death on May 2, 1991.

Ila was very active in athletics throughout her entire life. She played tournament golf and volleyball until the age of 60. She coached many softball, volleyball and basketball teams and was active in bowling and golf leagues. She was a lifelong Iowa Hawkeye supporter who never missed a football or basketball game. She was also an avid reader.

She is survived by one daughter, Jaimie (Richard) Shaffer of Peosta; two grandchildren, Tyler and Hannah Shaffer and one great granddaughter, Jennifer Shaffer. She is also survived by a brother, Tom (Jean) Engler of Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Ila is also preceded in death by her parents.

An Ila Beers Memorial Fund has been established.

Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m. August 15, 2009 at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, Iowa
Interment: August 15, 2009 at Storm Lake Cemetery in Storm Lake, Iowa
