Elvin “Stub” Stabelfeld, age 82, of Storm Lake, Iowa died August 4, 2009 in Storm Lake.Elvin Frederick Stabelfeld was born September 9, 1926 in Cherokee, Iowa, the son of John F. and Frieda M (Johannsen) Stabelfeld. He attended grade school and later attended high school at Brooke Consolidated where he graduated in 1944.
Elvin then worked on the family farm until 1947 when he began his seven (7) year career as a pitcher for the Chicago Cubs Farm Team system. He played for various teams across the U.S. including the Daytona Beach Islanders, Des Moines Bruins, Dallas Eagles and Los Angeles Angels.
Highlights of Elvin's baseball career include, pitching a no-hitter game on August 16, 1949, holding the western league record for pitching the longest game with least hits: only 1 hit in 12 innings, and the winning Texas All-star pitcher. Elvin was drafted into the Army on November 14, 1950, where he was assigned to the Signal Corps, serving as a Teletype Repair Specialist until he was honorably discharged on April 8, 1957. While serving, he pitched for the Fort Monmouth Signaleers army baseball team along with Whitey Ford. Immediately following release from duty at Fort Monmouth, Elvin was called to report to spring training camp in Phoenix, AZ with the Chicago Cubs.
On February 11, 1954, Elvin was united in marriage to Donna Jean VanSlyke in Ida Grove, Iowa. This couple was blessed with four children: Deborah Ann, Dawn Maria, Julie Kay and Jeffrey Joseph.
On May 13, 1965, Elvin was baptized into the Catholic Faith and he was later confirmed on May 19, 1965 in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Elvin was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. He belonged to the American Legion, Amvets Local Post #66 and numerous bowling leagues in Alta and Storm Lake. He also was a Pirates coach for the Storm Lake Little League Baseball Association. Elvin loved spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping and playing cards, especially pinochle, and of course, watching the Chicago Cubs on television.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Donna Jean, of Storm Lake; his children: Deborah (Dean) Linden of Walnut, Iowa; Dawn (Jim) Lauck of Sioux City, Iowa; Julie (Roger) Scadden of Schaller, Iowa; Jeffrey Stabelfeld of Storm Lake; his grandchildren: Kristin (Dove) Richardson –Foster of St. Paul, Minnesota; Sean (Andrea) Richardson of Fort Dodge, Iowa; Daniel (Tobie) Scadden of Illinois City, Illinois; Brandon Scadden of Jackson, Minnesota; Ashley Scadden of Iowa City, Iowa; Christopher Scadden of Schaller, Iowa; Amanda SNyane
