Joanne B. Lehr, age 81, of Sioux Rapids, died on Thursday, July 9, 2009, at the Mercy Medical Center at Sioux City.


A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 18, at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Church in Sioux Rapids. Burial will be at a later date. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.

Joanne Barbara Rice, the daughter of Ross and Mabel (Holland) Rice, was born in Laurens, on Jan. 26, 1928. She received her early childhood education in Moville, and completed her education in Storm Lake, graduating with the Class of 1946. Joanne continued her education at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake where she graduated with her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1950. While in college, Joanne served as president of her sorority.

On April 16, 1949, Joanne exchanged her wedding vows with Jerry D. Lehr, and this couple has been blessed with four children: Robert, Richard, Jerry W., and Rebecca. Following their marriage, Joanne and Jerry resided at Hornick and Sioux City. They came to make their home in Sioux Rapids in 1952. Jerry has been in the insurance and real estate business and Joanne was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker and enjoyed caring for her family and supporting her children in all of their activities.

Joanne was a member of the First United Church of Sioux Rapids and also held memberships in many civic organizations. Joanne loved spending time with her family and friends and will be fondly remembered as a very community-minded individual.

Those who will always cherish their memories of Joanne include her family: her husband, Jerry of Sioux Rapids, her children: Robert and Gail Lehr of Grand Prairie, Tex., Richard and Teresa Lehr of Bloomington, Ind., Jerry W. and Lori Lehr of Indianola, and Rebecca Lehr of Sioux Rapids, ten grandchildren, one great grandchild, her sister: Marjorie Edwards of Madison, Wisc., other relatives and her many friends.

Joanne was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, James Rice.
